Thousands of Goats have been shot with 22 Mag in conditions and distances you mentioned and it does the job perfectly well .

@berg243 did you ever use that rifle with subsonics, but without a suppressor? What was the noise like?

I would try and find a 16 inch barrel lever action in a pistol cal or 30 30.

A lot of fun and your boy would shoot 357 or 44 mag easy!

keep your eye out for the bisley version of norinco in 7.62x39mm.......pretty darn similar to the blackout terminally and a hell of a lot cheaper to get yourself set up...for the sub 150yard shooting these rifles were made for,you dont need sub MOA grouping....good solid chest shot with supersonic ammo and animal isnt going more than 50 yards,take out shoulders at same time and 5 yards is more likely.I only sold mine as had a .308 in cupboard as well and already owning a .270 justifying keeping 08 was going to be hard as it was stuck between the two,it can do all the x39mm can and more....being a reloader makes it the more versitile round. loved the x39 as a bush rifle and had lots of fun shooting wallabies out in open with it too.

the bisley versions appear to have been made by hand and foot rather than just by foot....never had an issue with mine.

That won't be happening. I would get a barrel chopped if I had to. No gunsmith in Northland. DPT did a good job for me in the past, but shipping rifles is such a headache now, I'd rather avoid it.

any engineer that you would trust will have no issue shortening and threading a barrel for you
Iv even had one done by the guys who do Hydraulic hoses
usually costs $50-75

You will need to take your barreled action in without the stock some times and know what thread you want

A .450 is going to be 16mm +

usually they just sneak the action past the chuck and leave it on, at worst iv had to take my trigger off
Trueflight said the same thing and urged me to go with the thread you mentioned but with 6+ rifles and the ability to share suppressors Im going to stay with it

Update. Had a good look at the Ruger Ranch Rifle. I know it's a cheaper gun, but it felt cheap! Clunky and the LOP was too short. I know a lot of people like them and I'm sure they do the job, but it's not for me. I'll have a look at a Bergara today.

Had a look at the ruger American compacts? Can buy online for around 600 to 700 or so

Got my hands on a Bergara today. First impressions, solid little unit. Very well made. Impressed!
