    Shortening into fluted barrel

I’m pretty sure I have read that it’s allgood depending on how deep the flutes are but is it generally ok to shorten and thread a fluted Tikka barrel back in the flutes or can it have issues? I compromised on my Tikka rem mag and shortened back to just shy of the flutes.

I shortened my tikka fluted barrel to 16 inches which was a 7mm-08 reamed out to .284

It was shortened by Gunworks well into the flutes and I never had a problem.

It does depend on what size you want to thread down to, I did my Sako Finnlite & I wanted 14/1 & really that is not quite enough, I haven't used it enough yet to say but I think it will be ok, a couple of the Flutes were slightly deeper than others so not fully threaded .

Wonder if it's threaded off the bore rather than the outside and the hole doesn't quite go down the middle

Had my tikka T3x superlite .308 shortened to 16" by DPT and one of their suppressors fitted. They wouldn't do it if any problems doing so. Hasn't effeced the accuracy at all.

Very likely as it seems most of the "holes" aren't plum dead center of barrel, but on this barrel you can see some of the flutes are deeper & wider, need to check more of them to tell for sure .

It certainly sounds like the hole is off center as I would imagine the barrel would be positioned in machinery using the hole as centre for the flute cutting which would explain the deeper flutes on one side. Probably would be held same way for threads I would think so they would be centered on hole rather than barrel external.
