    Should I wait... (rifle purchase)

    Hey guys,

I'm in the market to purchase a new rifle (new/second hand). However, was wondering if you guys would be able to shed some light in regards to whether I should jump on a deal now or wait until the Sika show in Nov. More so, are there actually any savings/deals to be had on rifles at the Sika show or is it more gear that is typically on sale?

Lastly, on a separate note, is there typically a time of year which prices on rifles dip based on new model entries?

    Cheers

Do you have a fav or local sports shop

I’d go chat to them and let them sort you for everything you need

Often making a long term deal with a shop yields better results for you

They will value your custom and you will value their ability to supply

I would think anyone selling rifles at the moment private or shops will be negotiable - yes wait but only to get what you want - be wary of the package deal scope rifle combos some of the big chains do - all to often its a scope they have not been able to sell - many have those horrible reticles with little bars all over them - very difficult to use in low light - be patient the best deals really are on here

Hunting and Fishing currently have some stonking deals going on the common factory rifles, probly part of the problem for the small shops . . . . But great if you are a consumer.

Just bought a new rifle last week. It had been on the shelf for a year probably, they dropped the price, threw in a set of Talley rings and fitted my existing scope (no money for a new scope) and bore sighted it. I went back a few days later and picked up the back-end for a DPT suppressor in 15x1 as it was a 14x1 from my old rifle and bored out the back ring as the new rifle was 2mm bigger in the barrel.

Up until last week the only thing I had bought there was a box primers a year ago. They have been great to deal with, are independant and I can walk there so long as I'm not taking a rifle.

The service was excellent and so I will be using them as much as possible going forward.

As 7mmsaum said find a place you like that gives good service and become a valued customer then when deals are to had they could be had by you. Ignore the naysayers since your going to have to register it anyway as the register much to all our annoyance isn't going away before we all have to join it.

If you're happy to buy used or even near-new there are some ridiculously good deals in the buy and sell section on here at the moment. Stuff doesn't seem to be moving much and sellers are negotiable.
I'm guessing you don't yet have access if you just signed up but I think once you interact on here a bit that section will become visible to you.

Yes @HappyJack we are very lucky to have a gun shop with 20m indoor range in our wee town I support them when I can too.

Drop their name. Give them a plug. If they did so well, they deserve it.

Yep I never used them when we lived here before moving to Hanmer as they were not quite finished building then but was following progress interest.

Im a real sucker for buying second hand rifles rather than new(if its from the right person).
I dont get quite the same fizz buying brand new off the shelf unless shes a beaut.

Generally much better bang for buck.

Yeah I've heard about the buy and sell section, will keep any eye out for when I get access to it in future. Definitely some good second-hand deals to be had.

I do like the idea of finding and supporting a local supplier/store as well. Thanks for the advice!

When I was in the market, I noticed a lot of 2nd hand riffle selling at or near to new price.
Either I was ignorant or people expect unrealistic price for their 2nd hand gears.

A good time to buy is when you need (or want) it and have the $

There isn’t really a seasonal dip, except maybe in the bigger stores during june when they clear stock for end of financial year reasons. @Coop may be able to confirm/deny/expand on that. At any rate, best time to buy is when you see something that

    a- works
    b- fits
    c- you like
    d- you can afford

If A through C are all fulfilled, it won’t matter what you buy afterward, that rifle will be one you keep hunting with.

I have found that gun shop staff can be a bit funny when they don’t know you, but once that relationship is established it’s good.
It is far better than shopping somewhere like JB Hifi/Bunnings where the sales assistant comes and asks if they can help, when you ask a question about something you’re holding and have already read all the writing on the packet, they start reading the writing before trying to answer your question.

Another thing to bear in mind is that shops (even the ones with the staff with most integrity) will try to sell you what they have in stock . . . . It's how they make a dollar. If you can it's best to identify exactly what best fill your requirements then ask your local to supply it, if they can't or won't then go further afield!
