All it does is adjust trigger to sear engagement.
Winding it out will lessen that engagement therfore allowing it to break with less travel.
Depending on the finish of the internals and trigger spring, it will determine how good you can get it without any other work.
If you still have the manual it should be in there somewhere.

@R93 - I don't believe that is correct. The white silicone covers a small screw and locknut that retains the actuator spring and enables it to be preloaded(this is close to minimum adjustment from factory in my experience).

The Howa HACT trigger modification that can be found on YouTube reduces the overly heavy trigger pull by reducing the preload on the stock actuator spring. By removing length from the spring preload is reduced on the actuator bar, lightening trigger pull.

Changing the sear engagement is a risky exercise for the inexperienced and certainly something that I would only get a trained gunsmith to do for me.

If you Google 'Howa HACT trigger diagram' there is a nice image that makes it easy to see.

Same thing. Actuator or sear. Doesn't matter. What ever disengage with the hammer or striker.
However I see it does only effect spring tension opposed to engagement therfore not reducing travel.
I was wrong there.

I have never pulled one to bits.
Have only adjusted the available screw and it has never really improved the trigger.
Dying to pull one apart and work it but the actuator would make it hard to get what I would call a good trigger.

It does explain why they're so crappy.
Too many moving parts.

Agreed, they feel crappy with an overly heavy trigger pull. Lighten that sucker up and they're very nice. Maybe not Timney nice perhaps, wouldn't know as I've never owned one. But very nice nonetheless.

The HACT trigger is very easy to work on to lighten the actuator spring (either chop or replace with lighter spring rate). Once modified it's a nice unit for OEM on a bargain cheap rifle - a Timney is half the cost of a whole Howa!

Now about those Hogue stocks....

Edit: Pro tip - put clear tape over the top of the teensy tiny circlips when you try to remove or replace them. Ask me how I know this is invaluable advice 😁

You snip a coil and a bit off of a spring inside the trigger unit, to significantly lighten the trigger.

To be fair, for someone that just wants a plain hunting rifle to shoot deer out to 300 odd yard on occasion, there is nothing wrong with the Hogue.

Yep....thats me.....

Not a fan of cutting springs on anything essential unless I personally owned the firearm.
Can be a short term fix due to spring quality.
Would rather replace with lightened OEM springs if available.

Removing burrs and ensuring angles are correct and sharp does more for a trigger than springs.
Might be a personal thing but I prefer a 3lb crisp trigger to a 1/2lb griity one.

They aren't that terrible really. As much as I wanted the Alpine rifle I simply didn't have the budget for it when getting back into shooting. So I stiffened the foreend and bedded the action with the kits from Ballistics Research.

As @R93 said at the start - they really shoot! Not just for an inexpensive rifle either. The first day I shot mine I put 4 rounds through one ragged hole. To say I was impressed is an understatement.
