    14x1 is the size of the thread and not the direction, though right hand thread would be the most common. (dare I say normal) I had a 30/06 done in 14x1 and a 7.62x39 done in 9/16 and 1/2 UNF on a 303. 1/2 UNF is not my preference for 30 cal as you say, because there is not a lot of meat left between the bottom of the thread and the bore.
