    Which size Redfield scope?

I've ordered a ruger American all weather stainless in 223.
Looking at Scopes, I'd like to try a Redfield. I'll be using it for hares and goat type shooting so was looking at the 4-12x42. I also see there is a 3-9x50. What is the difference in use and what does it effect by it being higher above the barrel?

One has more zoom, and the other has a bigger objective, arguably it might let more light and be higher above the barrel.

If you want to know which one is better then I think thats a decision you need to make but in reality either will do the job just fine

The rig will typically be used for small game at longer ranges so I guess the zoom is the trump
