Why do you want a sling on a rifle ? they're shit

I do carry a lightweight one if I really get into some shit & need to use both hands but they are a magnet for catching on everything, for long haul stuff a scabbard or strap to ya pack bro

I’d imagine the same reason why people buy .270s ....cause they like them and want one and cause they can....

Slings are funny things... as mimms2 said, strap or sling?

A strap is just for carrying the rifle, a 'shooting sling' is designed with use as a shooting aid in mind.

Both are pretty redundant IMHO... looked into it a lot and realised the following.

A strap doesn't carry the rifle all that well, just gets it out of the way.

A proper shooting sling (usually thick leather) is bloody heavy and most modern rifles are not designed for use with a shooting sling.

If you look at the Enfield above, it has dedicated attachment points which allow it to be used with considerable pressure between the rifle and user.

Try this on a factory plastic stock with the two metal studs which are just screwed in and you could damage the stock.

I've had some back and forth with Steve Garnett on this subject, he really knows what he is doing and the video below is a great wee treatise on it:

Interesting how he recommends the fitting of a barrel band.

For me, I always hunt with a pack and have found the Kifaru Gunbearer system to work very well:

It means you don't have a sling dangling about when using the rifle, and when carrying the rifle actually becomes a great arm rest for spying.

I think that first bloke is a dangerous bastard and I would never hunt with someone who wants to carry their rifle loaded all the time.
Most places are at least an hours walk in the dark to get in or get out and he wants rifle loaded all the time WTF
I like tape on the barrel and the rifle slung upside down across both shoulders for walking in

For great reading on use of the sling as a shooting aid, check out Todd Dow aka Rifleslinger.

I have one of his slings, a modern take on the 1907. Works equally well on EBRs and blued steel & walnut.

I hate how the synthetic ones slip and slide and I hate how the rubber ones bind and grip "too much"

Big fan of a simple leather sling I can get a wrap on for free standing or off the knees
