Slings are funny things... as mimms2 said, strap or sling?

A strap is just for carrying the rifle, a 'shooting sling' is designed with use as a shooting aid in mind.

Both are pretty redundant IMHO... looked into it a lot and realised the following.

A strap doesn't carry the rifle all that well, just gets it out of the way.

A proper shooting sling (usually thick leather) is bloody heavy and most modern rifles are not designed for use with a shooting sling.

If you look at the Enfield above, it has dedicated attachment points which allow it to be used with considerable pressure between the rifle and user.

Try this on a factory plastic stock with the two metal studs which are just screwed in and you could damage the stock.

I've had some back and forth with Steve Garnett on this subject, he really knows what he is doing and the video below is a great wee treatise on it:

Interesting how he recommends the fitting of a barrel band.

For me, I always hunt with a pack and have found the Kifaru Gunbearer system to work very well:

It means you don't have a sling dangling about when using the rifle, and when carrying the rifle actually becomes a great arm rest for spying.
