I have a Leupold Gold Ring 15-30 x 50 spotter and it has been a good first scope. Pretty good glass and nice and light... so it does actually go in my pack. That said I have found the top end magnification to not be quite enough. I'd say one of those 62mm Minox spotters (think they have 45x at top end) would be a good scope, a bit heavier though (I was considering one myself). I have a pair of Minox bino's and am really happy with them.
