I always wipe the chamber and barrel out for all my centrefires with meths to remove the oil before firing. Wasn't for that reason though.

Greetings Again,
If you look at the crown from the muzzle end (unloaded of course) you should be able to see each groove and land, probably 5 of each. You might need a magnifying glass. There should also be no nicks or dents to the edges. Unfortunately this is often found from careless use of a pull through or cleaning from the muzzle with a cleaning rod. It is fairly easily re crowned if needed. As far as the scope mount goes the side mount is one of the best as long as everything is tight. Best to test fire first to see if there are problems. Saves a lot of busy work for no return.
Regards Grandpamac.
The crown when worn will look rounded , a good crown should look sharp all the way round. If it's damaged it can be re crowned which will help accuracy a lot.
I have a couple of 303 s and the Isphore model I have has a bit of a worn crown but still shoots well with 150 gr Hornady bullets. I want to try some 180 gr bullets some day to see how it shoots with them.
I started this thread a while ago; lots of helpful 303 info from members in it :)

Currently waiting for therife to turn up , paid for postage and been to the police station to do the paperwork.
I will post a pic of emily when she turns up.
Haha I was just going off the nickname i found on the net for the 303.
On another note .... Anyone have a lee enfield sling they want to partways with ?
Put a cheek riser on the Butt as that scope is pretty high. Mines half a piece of shovel handle.
Been on there 50 odd yrs. Made shooting freehand much better.
If you graft it on slope it gently up to the rear , you don't want the front giving you a kiss on the cheekbone as the rifle recoils.
The sniper rifles had a block screwed on.
The triggers are originally 2 stage and can be made quite crisp on the final stage.
Talk to someone like Grandpa Mac.
Mine still does cir 2" at 100yds with mk7 ammo.
Pennyless
Take it from someone with experience with 303's. If you want a reliable centrefire hunting rifle, buy something more modern, isn't so expensive to buy ammo for and isn't prone to wore barrels and headspace issues.
there is LEE whackamole set on trademe right now.......currently sitting at $50
Some good advice from members here.
My dedicated modern hunting rifles will always take preference for hunting.
But messing around with old 303s is fun.
Whether it is going for an old school hunt with an open sighted sporter 303,
restoring spotters back to full wood, or going for a goat bombing with a fully wooded battle rifle.
It’s all fun.
Update:
Waiting, waiting,waiting..
Not Mr plods fault though , a delay with the post apparently ....stupid fastpost.
Sweet names , I tend to name most of my things.
My ute
My Trike
My wifes car.
Etc..

I have a couple of pictures to post but the ones at the start of this thread are there.
Also received my sling tonight from a member on here.
Now all I need is ammunition and to bore sight it in , then blast some paper to see how it shoots.

Here she is . sorry about the pic quality. I havnt got any ammo yet but going to get some tommorow. I plan to bore sight her in the weekend and fire her if all goes well.
Well sad story , went to hunting and fishing palmy -No ppu 303 ammunition and then went for a cruise to otaki hunting and fishing. No dice , No ammo here or there for me ol 30.
Guess I may have to order some online from somewhere if anybody has any.
The local gun shop in feilding has no PPU ammo till Nov.
Thanks jhon , unsure if i want to go down the rabbit hole of loading yet.
I managed to find a place in wanganui that will sell you ammunition and if you give them a days notice they will hold it for you to pick up instead of the bullshit police mail order form , They still want to see the ol FAL so its all above board.
The company is AMMODIRECT and is located in wanganui.
Hey jusepy, i recently got a laser bore sight for 303. I'm in the great palmy swamp myself more than happy to lend it. theyre 50 bucks otherwise! thats like almost 20 boooolits. Should make sighting in a bit less expensive get you on the paper quicker, my first time without it i considered if i should shoot at the side of a bus i was that bad
I bought a 223 howa 1500 for my first hunting rifle but i think i had a bug from all the war movies dad got me watching as a kid not to mention the encyclopedias lol everyone i know has said i'm mad and should be put in a home but I think once you buy an enfield you'll always have one or two.Attachment 173101Attachment 173102
Hey seftonB thats super kind of you mate !! Thank you.
I will see how I go with bore sighting and will be in touch if i struggle.
Hey do you reload your 303 cases ?
Just having a look on youtube at the mo .
Hey not a problem man, no i have looked at it though the leereloader the whackamole one did catch my eye. Will branch that way some day not yet though my mitsusbishis always wanting money aswell lol. Definitely hang onto your brass though next to the projos it looks like the most expensive part of the lot, apparently the 303 is not the beginner friendly round to reload either but i dont think that should put anyone off, lifes for learning right? if your after spares you cant find in nz theres a great website in the uk and mails it all rather well. bought sights for a no 5 wood work bands screws springs etc took a number of weeks to ship over here leeendfielspartsandmilitaria.com
Ok , Yeah im just looking at lee loaders now @hunting and outdoor supplies . Do you need a police order form signed by the police to get one sent via mail ?
Is it the initial cost of buying the loader , powder and the lead itself that costs ?
Thanks sefton i may have a look into that website and i will make sure i pick up my brass and keep it stashed away for a rainy day.
Ok hello friends...
Today i went down to the "range" and let loose with the 303. At first , my groupings were all over the place due to getting used to the high scope and no cheeck weld on the 303. As the day progressed i found my groupings definitely closing up. Got it on paper at 30 yards then went to a 100 yards .
was out with the brother in law and his mate , who were shooting modern 308's and other rifles.
I reckon with more time on the 303 and a bit of patience , i will be able to smoke a deer at 100 yards.
I am pretty happpy with the performance of the 303 , was unusual the height of the scope and trying to use chin weld instead of cheel weld but I think i will be able to adept nicely.
I wont put pics of my grouping on here because it was pretty nasty.
make yourself up a cheek riser of padding, plenty of photos of such on the net.
good to hear it goes bang and the leadn copper bit exits in the right direction.

Attachment 173401Attachment 173400
ok so i caved .
aaAttachment 173400 also here is a line up of what we were firing.
so she is doing EGGZACHARY what it was designed to do...4" at hundred yards......that was its design perametre...re read thread on it......
so if thats as good as you ever can get...its still going to be 8" at 200 yards which a very dead deer if shoulder shot.
you doing fine young fella...fine indeed. unknown rifle and scope, creepy two stage trigger, rifle stock designed to be fired standing NOT prone.....dead deer out to 200 all you need to worry about is putting Xhairs in centre of shoulder to pop balloon held between the lower shoulder blades and you will be eating venison steak in no time.
Thanks micky duck , I unfortunately shot the fuck out of a fence post which I will offer to replace . My target was leaning against the post and it got dealt too 303 style.
Nice entry wound but was blown all over the place out the back of the post. I am used to sighting in a .22 against a post , didnt realise the power and destruction a 303 has.
cocky will piss his self laughing when you fess up.
Yeah its the sister in law , so I think Its better to come clean than sweep it under the carpet.
Would absolutely suck to loose the rights to hunt/sight in guns due to a minute of stupidity .... better to come clean.
go spade in hand with new post and get it fixed......wont take more than half n hour and you will remeber the experience forever more.
Your groups are closing up as you're shooting because, in my experience, 303's like fouled barrels. That's why I no longer fully clean mine after a shooting session, just three passes with a boresnake style pull through and the third pass with a bit of oil on the end, then one pass of the pull though at the start of the next shoot session to clean out excess oil. Only fully clean your barrel if you've shot corrosive military ammo. Micky Duck is right about a cheek riser, makes a world of difference. Also be a good idea to find the lowest scope rings you can find.
My first rifle I bought at 18 was a beat up, black barreled cosmoline soaked Mk III that i bought from Century Arms for about $60. at that time in the States .303 was relatively rare so that also got me into reloading with a cheap Lee press and dies. Now 43 years later and a couple of hundred guns later i'm back enjoying the .303 Could have something to do with Jacinda taking away all my E-cat toys but I've accepted reality and find my kicks were i can. All the cheap military stuff only goes up in value as more countries outlaw guns. I imagine we will be the last generation to enjoy relatively unfettered gun ownership.
Hello again friends !
Today took the 303 for another shoot at the "range" after making a home made cheek riser out of foam ( making a temporary one till i see if it works out)
Went really well at 35 meters , then went to adjust the scope to zero the old girl and then we started playing around the world again with the target.
Went out to 50 meters and it was horrible....
Oh well back to the drawing board i guess.Attachment 174021
Attachment 174026
Here is my temporary cheeck riser , made the rifle feel so much better and more stable.
I think i need to work on my hold or somehow make my grouping tighter .
