Can anyone recommend someone in Christchurch to bed a rifle for me? Bought a stock for my model 7 and it has been bedded already (to someone else's action) and mine doesn't sit with the barrel straight in the channel and it really annoys me. I'm not doing it myself because if there's one thing I'm good at its making a mess of things.

Havnt asked them but taking action an barrel there on Wednesday to have a bit of a tickle up, I was sure someone told me that Robbie doesn't really do bedding jobs unless it's part of a complete build but I could be wrong. I know someone who does great bedding jobs but I want my rifle back this side of Christmas.....

To be clear, I would suggest Gunworks first, and if he cannot, second I would ask who he would suggest. If you get stuck then I can approach the fellow I know of. Robbie and co are pretty good to deal with but bedding is one of those jobs that takes a fair bit of time and care but is not financially rewarding for a business paying for labour so I do understand why the reluctance.
not really nessary for a gunsmith to bed a gun, just someone tidy who is patient
I bedded my remington when I lived in christchurch and well things dont dry and set when its cold, long story short bedding material comes out like bubblegum if you dont wait long enough
rod woods fixed it for me.
Seem to recall hearing that Rod Woods living in Oz now.....

Do not forget to put release agent on the action screws and on the trigger guard where any bedding compound can seep through! Mix your bedding compound according to the instructions and apply it to the cut out ares of the stock with a wooden spatula. Take care to make sure there are no air bubbles, and be liberal enough to ensure that some compound overflows when the screws are nipped up. Do not tighten the action screws too much, just enough to hold things in the right place. Make sure that the stock can rest in a reasonably warm place for at least twelve hours (cold weather can prevent the compound from setting properly). Trim the excess bedding compound off with a craft knife or chisel (being carefull not to scratch or gouge the rifle) before you crack the screws free with a neat-fitting screwdriver. A swift smack on the underside of the barrel at the fore-end with usually snap the action free of the bedding. Trim the bedding neatly with a chisel, clean, oil, and assemble the mechanism, and put the rifle back together. Allow another 24 hours to cure before test-firing. The barrel should be free of stock contact from the bedding forward. See! Nothing to it!:)Quote:

Bought and used this, worked well and awesome instructions.
I've found that a dremel is an excellent tool to remove surplus wood, find it easier than a chisel.
the mill makes it eaven easier and makes nice straight lines when cleaning up the mag well ect once compound has hardened

Bed it with a free floating barrel. Test it. See how it goes. If it's shooting all over the place, then apply pressure with different thickness of plastic strip between barrel and forehand tip till it shoots to your satisfaction. You can evantually apply a blob of epoxy compound under the barrel under tension with that particular strip to make it more permanent . You will have to make sure to apply some release agent under the barrel before end, and you will have to always reapply a similar torque on the action screws to get the same tension on the barrel If you ever take the action out.

Should throw the poor old gunsmith a bone and try and give him some other work while doing it as to do a good job is time consuming and probably below minimum wage. That's why many not interested unless with some other jobs to try and get an earn out of it
Bedding a stock is an hour max, especially something as simple as a Rem 700 or a model 7. Sako 75's are the worst. Buy the compound and do it yourself. It is really easy to do.
I have seen some very ugly stuff done under an hour bedding wise. Attachment 49940
Ha ha, yes looks familiar, my old Win 670 243 took 2 goes to get right, think I was working for around 50 cents an hour on that job

I don't recommend people to others for these sorts of jobs. As you know , something may go wrong and then, who gets blamed :)
However
Jim Carlson has bedded my CZ 223, BDL 30 06 and Husqvarna 9.3x62.
I generally do stuff only once and move on it if doesn't work out.
Thanks @jakewire, my dad is a commercial shooter down your ways, he puts a lot of lead down range each year and only uses Jim for any rifle work, as you know Jim has had to slow down in recent years but his work has always been top notch and I found him great to chat to, he always gives my dad some friendly stick as hes one of the only commercial guys that has always used 7.62x39, but he has actually recently finally managed to talk him into giving 223 a go!Quote:
