As far as I know the SBS barrel is threaded into the receiver, so you should have no issues re barreling it.
The older SSGs were pressed in - which is probably where the rumor started...

I dropped mine into a Boyds stock, which required a minor amount of fitting and it was bedded and still shoots the 162amax into 1/2 moa all day long.

I'm not sure why they are not popular, could be the fact that the are heavier than a sako or tikka but they are a great rifle and at the current price they are great value imo
