    Sticky synthetic stocks

Saw a Sako synthetic stock that had gone all sticky. The chap used hand sanitiser, which is mostly alcohol, and rubbed it all over and left it for an hour or two then rubbed it off with old cloths. Did it a few times and it came up good as new.

Great way to fix it !!!

I saw one a few weeks ago that did the same thing after it’s owner got a very small amount of sunscreen on it

I wonder if sunscreen remnants have been to blame for other stocks with a similar condition ?

I have seen sunscreen hand/finger prints attack the clear coat on Toyotas plenty of times

Good to know. I have a Thompson Centre Dimension which has a known problem with both stickiness and a thin outer film peeling off like sunburn. I thought it may have been susceptible to bore cleaner. But sunscreen makes sense. But I got it off a guy on the West Coast so can't be sunscreen, no sun there. Probably mosquito repellent. Which I know destroys trout lines.

Deet is probably the best for sandflies but the worst for synthetic stocks.

My old Zeiss rangefinder with soft panels went sticky. Never exposed to any chemical. Just an age thing I thought. I just went, well here goes nothing, and cleaned it with meths. Took quite a bit of cleaning but it's no longer sticky and the soft panels don't appear damaged/haven't changed colour.

IPA is the safest initial approach for a lot of cleaning.

Do these products fix the problem or remove the offending material?

Yeah that makes sense too, add protection rather than remove stuff. Trial coming up...

Wash your mouth out with Waikato.
I'll have you know that the sun on the coast harsher than Canterbury for some reason at least it used to be.
And generally when you get a good day it's a good day all day not 4 seasons like canterbury.
Plus the last couple of summers that have have weeks without rain.
But yes I do agree in some spots the sandlies are hideous
