Anyone tried using Sierra 165gn(2140) hollow points? These used to go well in my Tikka at supersonic speeds. About to set up for subsonic and thought these might be worth a crack?

Nz hunter had a couple of good articles on subsonic 308 loads
IMHO & from my experience the best way to hunt with a sub sonic 308 etc is to think where would I shoot this with a .22lr.
The theory is big long pills so they tumble & cut, they won't expand.
The bigger the calibre the bigger the mess.
The tragectories generally make a rainbow look straight.
Apparently there are special sub pills available that do expand, Spanners was going to be making them IIRC
Just remember a subsonic 308 etc makes a 223 look like a big magnum in performance.
FWIW my $0.02 :)
To make a 308 sup work a good expanding heavy bullet is in order and it sounds like spanner is the man to talk to;)
Mike send me a PM with an address, as ive a few lead cast projectles that you can try, ive some in a similar weight that you are after, i have a few NOE molds that i imported from the states and these have pins for that allow a flatnose or HP.
*sigh* I'm STILL waiting for a lead wire die, RBBT set and a special custom punch - almost a year now....
Glad I didnt for out for the 338 dies also.....
Spanner are you extruding / swaging your own projectiles?
yip - I have a Corbin Hydro press

Some of the best subsonic projectiles I have used in 308 rifle cartridges are intended for pistols. Most have a very large hollow front.
Stalking the edges of my uncles farms I cant remember ever having shot a deer past 100yrds with subs, most have been inside 60yrds.
Years ago I made a die that held a 150g 30 cal corelokt, you could file the front off and drill the nose, I never shot a deer in the shoulder with that modified projectile, instead I chickened out and shot them in the side of the head. Always intended to test them on goats but never did.
Large open hollow nose for good 1000fps expansion

Prob with pistol projectiles in 30 cal is you're lookin at 32 pistol - bugger all avail in that size
I'm looking to make 180-240gr EXPANDING subs
Look sliek my RBT does are ready, just need to wait on the special coreseating punch and jacket serrater
Thats one aspect of reloading i would like to try some stage, ive merely opted for the "simple" cast loading and experimenting with variations of the Loverign design, ive one that i can HP but i think thats only just on 180 i think, could even be 160's. I need to do more work on it and the alloy mixes.
If you dont mind me asking what did the set up cost and where is a good place to start?
I'm still struggling with the Yanks & their lead times.....
It's like a gigantic pissing competition to see who can make their customers wait the longest :wtfsmilie:
If you pay some of them a big fee up to & over 100% you can cut your lead time by half or more :OSMILEY:
If Kiwis were in that position most of us would get more staff/machinery & turn stuff out faster.....
One guy I deals with has over 2 years wait time.
He has 2 guys working for him in the workshop.
He wont hire someone else, thus making 50% more money and reducing his backlog to 16 months and probably getting more business due to the fact people dont turn away due to wait time.
Then again, hes been doing this for 40 years and you cant change him - he;ll send you a 20000 word essay on why NOT to do it - in which he could have propably done the job you wanted doing.
BUT if you pay double price to cover his overtime for staff etc etc you get it within 30 days.
I'm ALMOST at that point where I've had enough and will just pay, then again I cant quite yet justify over $500us for a single punch let alone $700 for a jacket serrater I need to progress
This stuff is for 30cal
I have gear for 44 at the moment but waiting on a wire extrusion die
Interesting. I have plans of commandeering the old mans single shot s/s 308 and butchering it for a bush gun, just need funds for scope and suppressor.
Any way you could get a drawing of dies and get them made in NZ? might not be cheaper but would be a hell of a lot faster
Hows progress on the dies spanners? Have a short single shot s/s suppressed rifle waiting for some expanding subs;)
I believe Barnes make special sub sonic pills designed for 300BLK. Might be worth a look if you can find them. Digit's bringing in some 300BLK stuff.
Ill look into it cheers, Still keen to try some of spanners when he gets up and running
STILL waiting..... If I had a pre order for 1000x then I'd pay the extra (double) and have it here is 30days.
But an extra grand to get these guys to actually do the last punch doesn't float my boat
E T A ? or is it a case of youl get them when we are good and ready and you will be real grateful
Barnes make a 110 TTSX for the BLK. Basically jumping on the bandwagon more than any actual good IMO. They already had a bullet and made it worse for the BLK.
No sub that I'm aware of or can find reference too.
Expanding subs are on the tacticool shooters list of needs :)
is dumduming hollow point projectiles an option anyone has tryed?
? I thought a "dumdum" was a marginally stabilized projectile that tumbled on impact. But I have been wrong before:D
Iv just ordered some 90gr xtp in 30cal, bit light but they rate them for muzzle velocity s as low as 700fps in pistols.
Guess il find out if they will expand(or shoot for that matter) in due course.
"Iv just ordered some 90gr xtp in 30cal, bit light but they rate them for muzzle velocity s as low as 700fps in pistols."
be good to hear how they go Viet
I thaught it was the process of cutting an x into a military procjectiles jacket to make it expand, to do it to a soft nose I would have thaught it would help to get it opening up and mushrooming
