There is a huge media bash up on ARs at the moment. I don't own an AR, nor am a fan. But I have researched some of the stuff going on.
Here are some interesting stats from the USA:
- less than 3% of firearms homicides are committed using rifles, rifles includes ARs (note these numbers even include AR killings). Most deaths are by pistol (around 96%)
- most school shootings are with pistols
- most mass shootings are with pistols
- some will argue ARs allow a higher kill count, the most killed at a school shooting was 33 people, shot by pistols (glock 9mm and walther 22)
- some will argue that AR shootings a disproportionately high. ARs are the most popular rifle in the USA (~ 7 million of them), so the stats are the opposite - disproportionately low for ARs.
- some will argue high magazine counts, you can get 40+ round mags for pistols.
Will banning ARs make a much of difference? It's unlikely, ARs does not cover other semi-auto rifles like BARs and Mini-X's. Then you've got pump action/level action options. And the statistics show the real threat is pistols. The USA are never going to ban pistols.
