Swaro Alumina style caps

Now is it just me or are Swaro caps a bit shit compared to those cheap Leupold Alumina caps....

Was load developing a Sako Carbon light (don't get me started on the constant failure to eject a spent case scenario, yeah I know gotta expect that from a cheap rifle :P) for a good client with a "you beauty" (it really is Team Seagull) Z8 yesterday

It was always going to be a mission, I couldn't find the lands on the Sako even with a 197 SMK... we made a doovery & it turns out a REM 700 7-08 rem has around 5mm free bore & a T3 Tikka has 6.5mm & this 7 x 64 has around 20mm :wtfsmilie:

Anyway back to my rant, every time I fired the rifle the eyepiece cap flew around under recoil & smacked me on my glasses.....quite annoying...:XD:

Neither of them appear to lock back like those the Leupold Alumina caps, they just flop about under spring tension...have I missed something here...????

One plus it looks like the 7 x 64 might shoot the 120 TTSX at around 31-3200+ fps, time will tell, its pretty lively & there is no way the throat will ever erode :D

Very nice rifle if you can put up with the spent case not wanting to leave the ejection port at all & your nice scope getting marked along with the cases getting dented..... :wtfsmilie:

Is that a long action? The short actions are a wee bit hit and miss for the ejection problem but I haven't come across a long action that had the same issues, my wsm does it if you're being a girl with the bolt, rip it back quick and she spits them out no worries, it's also much worse if there's not another round in the mag and I think that wsms can be a bit funny full stop for feeding and ejecting in certain rifles, it feeds sweet as in mine.
Wanted to get swaro caps for my z5 but they don't do objective only eyepiece which is a bit dumb, even vortex does flip caps for ALL their scopes, thinking of swapping it for one of them... maybe that's the answer to your problems too Greg, throw a Vortex on that "cheap rifle"

Yep seems to go pretty well but the throat length is a little disappointing to be fair.....

Well I guess it had enough primary extraction at least to drop the case on top of the mag or hit the scope ;):thumbsup::D

No it ejects alright, then the case hits the bottom of the scope & falls straight back into the action, marking the scope & denting the case mouth in the process, a very handy feature....:ORLY:

If shooting freehand you could just roll the rifle whilst ejecting & gravity would be your friend, but lying prone or shooting from a bench with a bipod not so much.......

The owner must be a calm sort of guy for you to be ripping the shit out of his $10k worth of gear.

True, that eject design fault is just a total fuck up. Let’s hope they sort it on the next model. Maybe a plunger ejector like on the 3 lug TRG-S.

I can recall reading about ejection issues with 85's and a recommended remedy was to use the next height up rings. Can not confirm or deny!
As for the cap hitting your glasses :thumbsup: because i'm still wearing a kiss from "Your" Leupy and CZ from last years Big Bore Shoot! :(

Must have been designed by the same guy who designed the useless lens covered on their bino's I'm already on set number 2 of them and I have barely used them in anger

Mine get pulled open every time I pull them out of my bino bivvy, sometimes they get pulled right off, drives me bonkers. Lucky the glass is worth it :)

I have lens caps on my Swarovski scopes and I've never had any issue with them coming around to meet me, although I must admit I'm using a lighter calibre than you.

Have you tried putting them at different clock positions?

I have a Carbonlite in 260 which ejects fine but still has the same long throat issue. Annoys me as well so it's getting a new barrel chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor. Well, that's my current plan anyway, I have contemplated starting fresh but I do really like the action, trigger and mag set up and the stock. Mine has a crappy Leupy on it, currently without scope caps so there's no issues there at the moment...

Why even bother with the caps when using a bino bivy. I never put the one's that came with my Leica HD-B's on the bino's since I'm using a Kuiu bino bivy

Because sometimes I take a look in the bivvy (also a kuiu) and discover leaves and sticks and all sorts of nasty little lens scratching things

I have one of the badlands magnetic bivvys (Not a fan as they open up from time to time) but I quite like that the caps are always removed when I pull the binos out. I want to look thru them after all.[emoji16]

Caps pop but stay fixed to the binos. Never had them come completely off.

And yeah I wouldn't not use caps in a bivvy as I have seen a few lenses marked by stuff in the bottom.

Almost same diff but took the yanks 100 years to catch up...

I've read all about these ejection problems with the 85. I have 2 of them, different models, eg one Finn and one wood and haven't experienced this problem at all

Mine are the medium action but if your using the 7x64 it will be the same action as mine.
The throat length in my 6.5x65 has never been a problem.

@The Claw Reason for picking the 6.5 Creedmoor over 6.5x47 or another 260? I’m tempted to turn mine into a 6.5SLR

I have another 6.5 Creedmoor, so that's main reason. If I still had 6.5x47L dies then it would be a little more difficult to choose... CM fits better in the short action compared with a 260, especially when I can't do anything with the mag length. If I could get a 3 inch mag then the 260 would make more sense given that I have dies and brass already.

@The Claw I tried cycling some 6.5x47 rounds thru the finnlight & they didn't cycle very well so it's probably not an option

The shorter Sako 85 SM action (.308 size) doesn't have the ejection problem, at least on mine and all of the ones I've seen being used. Numerous reports on the web of some of the longer 85 actions having the case hitting the scope.

I’ve only ever struck the ejection issue myself on the xs 223 action. Never had the issue with the short or medium length actions.

My “S” action 85’s all eject well.
