    Thoughts on 308 Setup

    Hiya.

I have a 308 in Remington 700 with Southfort Labs CF Stock & CF Barrel with Timney trigger. It's very mellow to shoot and doesn't need a brake or suppressor. Tidy rifle and very light.

I have recently acquired a new VX6HD 3-18x44 CDS model from the states for a steal.

I regularly hunt tahr and have never needed to shoot one further than 400yards. I have no real interest in shooting beyond 500/600 yards.

I am looking at running factory 178gr ELD-X and sending through the data to have my custom CDS setup. I'm not interested in reloading at this stage.

Is it overkill using this scope with this calibre? Will this calibre be suitable for my needs?

    Any thoughts would be appreciated

She,l be sweet iv got myn dialled to 550y using 165BT , im using a vx3 4.5-10x50 ...a little more magnification would be good but I can just get away with it at that range , I would think your vx6 will be spot on .

No harm in seeing them a little better.

    From a bulk point of view: A nightforce 5-25 perhaps, but a VX6 3-18 not a problem.

Hunted heaps at 5-600yds using 3-18vx6 and 3-15vx5 and I have just recently decided bugger it and will just use my 2-10vx5 from now on as it's all I need at that range and a bit lighter and more compact.

400y is a chip shot for a accurate 308 with validated data....I wouldnt bother with the custom turret myself weather and altitude can vary just get a MOA or MIl turret and use an app.

Leupold 3-9x33 ultralight with a screw on dial. I’ve shot it on steel to 600, and deer to just over 400

I havent used a CDS turret, but before apps I used to use JBM and create three cards for the temp, alt and range 0c, 15c and 25c and shoot to conversion on the back- no tbr then @Norway old school style.
As I learnt shooting goats under 400 yards etc, Keep It Super Simple, mate was out shooting me because I was pissing around with apps etc

Over 400 apps all the way

@VTR can tell you how the humble 308 can perform at range, he's just tipped over a big donk of a red stag at just shy of 500 yards.

if you know the range...eg rangefinder...a simple drop chart will get you on the money WITHOUT pissing around dialing to 400 yards anyday of the week.
