    Thoughts on this??

    Hi guys,
I'm after some advice, so a weatherby mark v in 270win has popped up for sale. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with them, good or bad.
Is it worth a serious look, if so what should I look out for, being it 2nd hand.

    Thanks guys
    Bevan

I want to ask the $. Not that I’m familiar with that rifle model at all, but in my book, there’s a relationship between realistic expectations and price (to be) paid.

If that’s your budget I’d seriously suggest you do sone online and phone research.

You’ll get a brand new rifle eg Tikka for similar.

Take the time to be certain whatever you choose fits you well. In that calibre comfort is important when u squeeze that trigger

Just buy a 7mm Rem Magnum. A hell of a lot cheaper to feed and essentially similar performance. Weatherby ammo is frighteningly expensive.

They're nice rifles, must admit I like a straight comb and the stock shape puts me off a bit, but had the opportunity to fondle @Philipo's one at the Toby shoot and very impressed, super light and nice to point for essentially a factory rifle. A lot more quality feel to them compared to a tikka

Their great rifles. Mine is getting STUGed right now but their fantastic. Big meaty bolts with either 6 or 9 locking lugs and touted as being the strongest production bolt action made. Roy Weatherby the founder actually found that when he was wildcatting with his now standard Weatherby magnums that the actions of the day just weren't up to the pressures, he used Brevex actions and FN Mausers( I stand to be corrected) for this purpose. He basically went and designed to strongest bolt action he could for his rounds and thus the Mark V was born.

They have a short bolt lift of only like 54 degrees(around that) and in general are very well put together. They just haven't gained the popularity of the likes of similar priced rifles for reasons I can't explain. If you do buy it I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Also STUG does Carbon fibre stocks for them if you feel like going down that path.

I hope this helps you out

One thing to consider is bolt lift, if you are used to a 90 degree bolt lift, you might find the lower lift of the MkV a bit different, the cocking effort is the main contributor to the feel. I couldn't really get fond of my Ruger RPR due to this factor. No doubt that the Weatherby will be better timed and finished (so smoother) than a RPR but you can't beat the physics of it.

Definitely not a deal killer . . . just one more thing

It depends on what model, also would depend on how old and where it was made as to whether 1600 is a bargain or just so so
Weatherby MkV's run from 2k to big $$
I've owned one, that is now owned by another forum member , he is still getting lot of use out of it and I found it very accurate.
If the right one came up I wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

Yeah they're mint rifles. $1700 or thereabouts is a bargain. Paid over $3800 for my .270 win ultralight.

Shoots sub-moa and it's super light. Low bolt lift makes cycling another round rather quick and painless.

I've owned Tikkas and Sakos. Prefer the MKV.
