If you sight for a 140 yrd zero at 1.5 high at 100,you have 5-6" drop at 200 yards with less than 90flb
God knows know what you have at 250 or more let alone a slight breeze.
I would consider it morally wrong to attempt to shoot an animal with a 17hmr at 250 yards.
    Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?

don't know what it is but i know from actual experience that it has more than enough to kill a hare instantly at 260, and fly through a frying pan at 270 so it is enough.

You do what you think is right or wrong, i'll keep doing what i have actually done, without issue.

Man this things gone west, he initially asked if a 223 he was looking at was a good buy or not, talk about Chinese whispers I love it!

I never saw the part where he said he was going to shoot possums out of trees with the 223. I shot 4 the other night with my 223.

Nice rifle and set-up, looks a good enough buy taking into account suppressor, threading etc. You obviously have your reasons for using this on possum extermination where you are but my all time fave for this has got to be hands down a Remington 870 pump-action with No 4 heavy game load

Dunno what the last few posts are on about, this is a .17 thread now........

My 17 HMR kills bunnies and magpies out to 175yds so far but not gonna stretch that, too far I reckon, possums up trees is great and no one needs a Kevlar umbrella

I think the 17HMR lacks pine tree branch whacking power for this task when they get tucked up, by the time you would be lining up your accurate scope rig he would be gone burger, as used to be the case with whoever was carrying the scoped rifle ha ha :-)

A 223 is not as fun as shooting possums with a 308..

Fuck it, just call in an air strike. A-10, the new wave in possum control

Use to do a bit of possum shooting in taranaki with the 10/22 the last couple years and majority of possums we shot were on the ground or halfway up trunks/fence posts. A bit different than in the bush.
A 223 loaded with 40gr VMAXES would be awesome. No through penetration with that load haha

Shot a possum the other night with a 200gn lapua sub from my 308.
It was all I had at the time.
    Killed it too.
