    Question Thoughts on this rifle/deal? Remington700 7mm-08

Hi all, looking to just get the opinion from a few forum members for this rifle/scope combo in the TradeMe link below

    https://www.trademe.co.nz/a/marketpl...5?bof=s4ksczCc

Its a 7mm-08 Remington 700 w/ Zeiss Terra 3x 3-9 (x42 maybe?). Guy is asking around $1300ish. I had previously been looking for a second hand Tikka in .270 but saw this and thought it was a reasonable deal on similar caliber. Just like to hear peoples opinion on the setup, potentially compared to a Tikka/.270.

Mainly hunting deer atm but looking to move into Tahr come Spring and keen to have a solid setup to be confident with. Hunting range would be max 400yd.

    Cheers

    @jpurdon - The Remington isn't threaded - $130 - 150, plus suppressor. Just something to consider.

The earlier BDLs were better built but as for value, it depends on what it actually sells for, not the starting price.

keep an eye on the buy/sell
personally I think that remington sell above what they should
none of those are great deals

BDL means no bottom metal which ill deal with on a kimber but theres no need to go without on a remington with how wide they are in the stock

if you are after 7mm 08 this would be a great rifle, and he is looking to change to 243
all round better rifle than both those above and you can choose what you want rather than getting stuck with a scope thats not right ect

Magnum sports Stratford has a 690 Tikka in .270 they are a little heavier but I would have that over all the others mentioned - they generally are real shooters and very well made

I could do you a deal on a Browning Xbolt in .270 - Talleys and Weaver Grandslam 3-10x40. $1600 and no pissing about with Arms office and couriers. Confirmed shooter.

The rifle would probably be quite satisfactory but so would quite a few others. Second hand rifles is a competitive market and it can be quite hard to move one on.
You may want to upgrade from a 3-9 scope when you’re ready to shoot past 200m.

So the key factor is price.
Find the price of a new tikka 270 and entry level scope of a name brand like like leupold, burris, zeiss or swaro.
Second hand should be 60-70% of that.
Check rings quality (for tikka, genuine optilock are expensive but optimal) cleaning gear and extras like a bag and ammo that might come with it and price those in too.
You will want 100 rounds of factory ammo bought at once all the same batch which is a fair whack of $$$ and could be decisive if you have a limit.
Add on a bit because Rem mod 700 can be hard to get new at times and subtract a couple of hundred because you’re in the south island and really wanted a 270.

Buy Aussie pricing it's probably a fair price but is it what you want?.

We can't have supressors, so discounting that I shoot an un-supressed 7mm-08 and I would like the cartridge, and others.

I haven't ever used a .270 but I expect it would suit your purpose.

I have bought several secondhand Tikka at around $900-$1000. No scope

Many upgrade options for Howa Tikka and Remington, all are capable of hunting accuracy so that probably doesn't narrow it down much.

You're confused with ADL. A BDL is not a cheapie.

    It's got a J-lock bolt.

Avoid unless you want a rifle that could suddenly decide it no longer wants to fire after a wee bump. You can remove it by replacing the firing pin assembly (GreTan or, shock horror... PTG....) which would be 100 USD down the drain.

    Stock looks crap too.

If buying a Rem, look for either a Stainless Action with HS Precision stock (avoid RR prefix receivers) or get something old like the 6mm Rem that @257weatherby has for sale.

Most of the quality Rem 700's or Model 7's were made during the time when bolts were still being made with cuts for the bolt locking safety, although this feature was deleted quite early on.
