Is there an easy way to find out the thread size on a barrel without specialist tools?
Idiot proof replies please.

thread a die onto it and see what it says it is
Measure the outside diameter and check the thread pitch with some thread guages

To get the thread pitch -
Hardly anyone has thread pitch gauges. So, just measure across the maximum number of thread peaks available, count the number of peaks, subtract 1 peak, divide this into the first measurement. Then divide that answer into 1 and that will give you the thread pitch per inch, or do the whole lot in metrics which is easier if it is a metric thread.
You can do a quick check by just measuring across 2 thread peaks but the chances of making an error are greater than the counting several and measure method. Need to use a magnifying glass if measuring just 2 peaks and the thread is fine - barrel threads are not.
