    Tikka t3 light weight mods

This has probably been discussed many times before. But interested in hearing about light weight Tikka mods, cost and if you think they are worth the $

Particularly interested to hear how much weight is saved by milling top of reciever and fluting bolt.
    Cheers G

Been down this rabbit hole with two of my T3’s (.223 & .284)

The biggest saving in weight for either of them would be the stock. Both of them have a stug Carbon fibre stock so the weight difference is very noticeable.

Bolt fluting, it’s more cosmetic than anything which I had done through Gunworks but the weight saving there was only 83/84 grams.

Like you I have thought about milling off the top of the receiver but would like to see one before doing it.

At times I look back and think of the money and time I spent on the .223 and think maybe I should have just bought a Kimber Montana .223 as it would have been about same cost

I would be curious to see someone who has milled the receiver too and how much weight it cut

I had Gunworks mill the top of the action more to get live rounds out easier and a little weight saving and the bolt spiral fluted for looks aswell as barrel fluted as part of the build. Senator carbon fibre stock. So this is my 7-375 with a 26” barrel a bit heavier contour than standard. And with a Nightforce on it now.

Had one that had the receiver milled and bolt fluted. Was reasonably light esp without the suppressor on a 19" bbl and a lighter scope. A carbon stock would be the way to go

I did mine, youd be lucky if bolt and reciever saved 100 grams, stock is more often than not best way to shave weight. It did look cool though... and much easier to top load ammo at the range. I got to a point with mine where I out a bigger scope on to get some weight back, it balanced better.

I think it makes sense if you are doing everything - carbon stock 130 - 200+ grams lighter depending on model, barrel fluting is 150 - 200 grams lighter and then you flute the bolt at 80 - 90 grams, chop the top of the receiver - 70 grams? (just a guess)?

Gunworks has the top of the receiver mod on their site but they don't specify the weight reduction

    https://www.gunworks.co.nz/shop/item...htening-action

Is that who did yours @cameronjackwhite ?

At the end of all of those mods you're potentially almost at a half kilogram lighter? If you are cutting down the fluted barrel you will lose even more weight.

I am looking into doing this with a 16" superlite t3x 6.5 Creedmoor, the end result will be hopefully the weight reductions will be closeish to the same weight as the scope I have for it (VX-5HD) If not I will have some fun getting there at least!

Yup gunworks did mine, they fluted bolt, milled reciever and fluted barrel and reblued all together. It made a decent difference. I kept mine at 22 inches so I didnt need a supressor but shooting 160tmks it was at 2850 she was lively. I'm not sure what the tikka stocks weight but when I changed out my model 7 plastic for a stug it was near on 500 grams right there. If you can save weight in the rifle I'm all for putting decent glass on it. Vx5s are perfect imo

Any chance I can see a pic of the full rifle? I'm considering whether to buy a factory fluted or get gun works to do it.

I'm really only wanting 2500 - 2550 as it is for a 400m max rifle so 16" will do me. I have an Oceania can for it so it will be pretty light.
