Is it time to leave the 27 gang?

    Hi guys.

Settled on a very accurate 18.5 7mm08 over the dog now which is primarily a bush, slips set up and great to shoot running, good old 150 grain fed powershoks. Work well too.

Looking at open country set up for next years thar and alpine hunts and open country.

Wondering whether to leave the 27 gang make jump from my 270 which is a shooter but ballistically close to the 7mm08 and head into to 7m rem mag territorty?

My personal max distance would be 500 yards. PB is about 400 so far. Is there really much in it for the extra recoil and noise, knock down power of a rem mag? or do I just load up some heavier pills and dial up or use a bdc? I have no experience with the rem mag or any mag or long range for that matter.

    Appreciate your input. Cheers.

Not really that much difference between 7mm-08 and 270, a 7mm rem mag would be the go if chasing tahr and having the extra knock down power to drop em in there tracks.

If you are confident with the .270 and the 7mm08, why change? Both will work well out to 400yds just fine on Tahr and Chamios.

Just stick with the 7mm08 they are good for 500yards with the right pill.
Load 140 or 120grn Nosler B Tip and you are good to go.

No doubt it is possible but if you are after dead right there performance 500y and beyond ,then any chambering based on the 308 case aint gonna cut it.
If you hit the spine or close to it it then yea it will drop on the spot but it aint DRT....all depends on your expectations of stopping power I guess.

On what planet does a 7mm08 hang with a properly developed .270?, got no real argument with the 08, but really?

nah stick with what you know....... if you get a good 7mm mag and suppressor it would be fine BUT how much would you realistically gain???? use a good hot 150grn load in the poohseventy and no big hairy goat is going to walk away...Ive shot them with 130s without issue.
if you have rangefinder and know your drops you should be fine.up to 350 yards its point and shoot with the poohseventy.past that you got to be on the ball no matter what you are using.
if you are going to have to look at drop chart/dial there is stuff all difference.

mate- for 500 max- stay 270- i use 280 rem to great effect out to 450. with 150 and 162 eldx. no real need for more powder use- more boot and increase in suppresor size.....

If you want to hit animals a long away away then yes a 7mm rm. If they are big then go to a 300 mag.
That was how one yank writer summed up the difference.
Ill buy the 270 off you.

I had a 270 win and was happy out to 500 yards no worries in good conditions, I now have a 270 wsm and I reckon it's easily a 600 yard plus rifle but hey horses for courses I think the 270win would easily be enough but if you want a change go for it after all its your choice.
All mentioned calibers will easily dispatch tahr if you have a good shooter stick with it (that's just my opinion) but hey I've been known to change rifles like underpants.
