Thread: Tops rifle

Just finished reading the article on the Kimber 280 AI. Seems like a good off the shelf tops rifle, light weight, reasonably accurate, any one else had experience with them?

Lots of people have man.
They are great to carry but with the stock design and lightweight some people struggle to shoot good groups with them.

I personally havnt shot one yet but spoken to quite a few who have them

Yea had one but not in that cal didn't like the swing safety so sold it on, but it shot well and was a pleasure to carry.

I'd agree with both of the above. The Safety is ok but only ok it is.
I never shot any real tight groups with my 280ai and it got the 140 and 150's really moving and I believe it was more me than the rifle.
The only real reason I sold that rifle was because it had a 24" barrel and I suppressed it. I didn't want to chop that calibre to a 18 or 20". Would have buggered things real quick.
Would I buy another in such a set up? Only maybe. Beautiful to carry and use on animals but to be frank nothing a 708, 284 wouldn't do in a tikka, so for cheaper.

Yeah buy a Tikka T3 finnlight (with the fluted barrel) in 7mm-08 and have it rechambered to 284win, or just get the same rifle in 7 Rem Mag, put a dial-able scope on it and call it done.

a good mate had one in 7mm-08 for a bit, felt like a kids toy didn't feel like a real rifle..... most people say there not accurate actual fact there very accurate just they are very hard to shoot accurately coz they have sacrificed nice to shoot for light id rather have something a little heaver with a proper length and shaped stock

I have a Kimber 84l in 30-06, would imagine it'd be a perfect "tops" rifle. I love the way it points for me, have chopped it to 18 or 20inches and put on one of Scott Traills suppressors, it has more than enough grunt for me and is superbly accurate, and light

I just created my own, Tikka M595 in 284 win just bedded into a McMillian Sako Hunter Carbon stock, so its more like a Tikka Carbonheavy ;-)



Shooting either the 150gr NBT's or the 162 Amax it will be good out to 600-700 yards.

Seriously tho, a T3 flutted Finnlite chambered in 284win, 280AI, 7mmSAUM or 7mm Rem Mag put into a locally made Carbon stock would fit the bill very well and give you plenty of budget left over for a good scope, and still save money on the Sako Carbonlite

What is a "tops rifle" anyway?

And is it illegal to use a "bush pig" above a certain altitude, or a " tops rifle" below a certain altitude? Do they have minimum and maximum weights?

So then I wonder what an "all rounder" might be like? Are there rules for them too?

I find all of this very confusing.

A tops rifle is something that can shoot longish distances accross gullies etc. Thats not to say you can't use your 16 inch barreled 308 bush pig with red dot sight but there are better choices and calibers for shooting 300m plus.

Carbon fiber stocks are definitly the next fashion trend.
