Totally Sick of Semi-Auto .22s

No more bloody semi-auto .22s for me. From now on it is bolt-actions all the way!
I even brought a single shot .22 the other day after my old POS Stirling model 20p turned 3 shot auto on me. :omg:
Yeah the bloody thing started firing 3 shot automatic strings and I NEVER played round with the trigger or action since I brought it new years ago.

Damn finiky .22 semi autos:
Had a Marlin Papoose that would stovepipe every 3 to 5 shots with every brand of ammo.
Another Marlin, this time a Model 60 that was deadly accurate but again I always had at least one ejection problem per 14 rounds (this was before the magazine limit).
Owned an old Browning SA20, that would only work with CCI mini-mags, nothing else would cycle the action, especially not subsonics.
The only semi auto I owned that cycled every type of ammo was a Ruger 10/22....that thing even cycled subsonics reliably. Yep it was great except for one thing...accuracy would be 'rabbit size' goups at 50m.

Enough! I want reliablity AND accuracy...welcome my new single shot .22 bolt action...I await your arrivial with open arms.

I reverted to bolt 22's years ago. I was never confident carrying a loaded semi that it was not going to go bang..........safe on or off.

Whereas with a bolt, even without the safety, several options. Closed on an empty chamber.bolt open....me happy.

Double tap everything awesome haha the ruger should have grouped better than that min could put 10 rounds in a $2 coin at 50m

just buy a 10/22 and be done with it. 1000's of small furry animals shot with very few problems (usually ammo issues)

Bummer run zara. I had a 10/22 years ago that was mint. Sure went through the bricks of ammo though.

bolt only for me now. I don't like self loading from a safety perspective.

'Double-tap'...Nah it was Triple tap!
The bloody thing was firing 3 shots in 1 second, then touch the trigger again and another 3 shots in 1 sec.
Felt like I had an M16 in three-round burst mode but there was no fire selector switch to change it out...no control at all!

Must admit it was a bit of fun at first before it sunk in how dangerous it was...plus the possibility of losing my firearms license if the police thought I had modified it.
Any way I delt to the POS Stirling...it has now gone to rifle heaven...Amen

I had a Stirling 20P shell bender. I gave it away and bought a Marlin 795.

Problem(s) solved,great wee gun.

Haha, my old M20 was good for 5” groups at 50m.
What a POS it was. Feed perfectly though.... after I dropped the mag and bent the feed lips!

I’ve had bolt CZ and Tikka .22s, nice guns for sure, but as my son shoots southpaw, righty bolties are no good for me. LOP with the fixed stocks was no good for kids either.
Whereas my former CMMG AR22 and now my 10/22 Target Lite with adjustable stocks were/are friggen laser beams and useable for my boy, both with being semis and adjustable stocks.

Each to their own.

The only time my 795 gave trouble was after I was too heavy handed lubricating the action. Otherwise faultless. Just wish a flush 10/22 -mag would fit it :-(

A few years back I think the score was around 10 million 10/22s produced versus 15 million Marlin semis (60s and earlier models, 795s).

I never had luck with ruger 1022 even it’s brand new. The best ever semi 22 was the cmmg and still is. Now there’s new brand called tippman . I am shooting federal bulk with it, last time I have shot 200r straight. Man I love them.

Every fault you have described sound like poor cleaning.

Get a modern AR styled .22LR mate. My Kriss DMK22C never fail me regardless how fast I tap the trigger.

I've tried CCI Stinger, CCI Velocitor, CCI subsonic and standard. Failed once per 1000 shots.

All you need to do is to clean it frequently.

I've been using my 10/22 for 35 years, will never go back to a bolt action.

Your Marlin semiautos cycle and shoot very well.

Have had about 10 of the Marlin semi models and all very good. Almost all sub half inch groups at 50m, and two model 60s extremely accurate - would touch 1/4" and average just above that. To make them cycle well you run them clean and near dry - as Zimmer notes above. Just one drop of oil on the bolt. Then use all things CCI - they love the stuff. If its an older model you may need to put in new spring kit which includes hammer spring - from Mcarbo.

Have also had about 6 ruger 10/22s and in straight bench comparison tests with Marlins, the standard Ruger accuracy is very poor - Marlin much superior. Shot umpteen thousand bunnies with a super accurate 60 and it proved very effective as do the wee 795s.

By all means get a bolt, but your problem with Marlin 60 was likely wrong maintenance and ammo selection. All rifles prefer to be fed some make of ammo - that's good - it's how we get the best out of them.

Maybe, but I used to clean the actions after every 2 boxes of ammo (approx every 100 rounds).

This is how I used to clean my semi-auto .22s:
1 - take the barreled action out of the stock
2 - while working the slide back and forth spray into the action CRC Brakleen
3 - wait 20 mins for the Brakleen to evaporate (leaves no residue after the solvents evaporate)
4 - put 1 drop of Devcon 3 ATF (automatic transmission fluid) into the action while again working the slide back and forth.
5 - put barrelled action back into stock = done.

I've got the stock left and that's it...but am thinking of making a crossbow out of it for my nephew.

Yeah I 'dealt' to it with my grinder and a brand new diamond cutting wheel, that was just waiting for a job like this.
It performed perfectly, nicely cutting the POS Sterling into a series of uniform pieces.

It really was a catharsis...a bit of pent up emotions over semi-auto .22s....
...I feel better now :D

Your cleaning method is pretty good, but I would do the Marlin action differently. Strip the action from stock, detach spring setup from receiver, then after removing bolt from receiver clean bolt and channel completely. Only one drop of gun oil on bolt to reassemble. Then focus on spring setup - remove every trace of powder residue esp from feedthroat. Clean thoroughly. Check position of ejector spring is correct. Reassemble. Cleaning is good every 3-400 rounds or when rifle starts tells you it needs cleaning!

Some people leave the Marlin semiauto action cocked i.e. open when in storage. This is not good for action springs as it weakens recoil spring and hammer spring - adversely affecting ammo cycling. Good to leave these semi actions closed. If springs are worn McCarbo do new sets at good prices.

These tips keep the Marlin semiautos operating well. Good luck with your bolt.. :)

No doubt about it, Ruger had a shocking batch of barrels in the mid 80s, maybe late 80s. A mate had one of the bad bunch and it was unbelievably poor accuracy.
I swore never to town one but after moving to Central I needed a good semi and got talked into a 10/22 after one of the new Savages shit itself.
The Ruger is excellent, maybe I got lucky but it is 100% reliable and best group was an awesome 6mm group at 50 yards.
Probably a total fluke but it is very accurate and unfussy on ammo.

A friend of mine had a Mini 14 and claimed it was capable of Minute of Milkjug accuracy at 100m.

Reading about ruger, it seems that their tooling for the Mini 14 got to the point of being really knackered, they invested in some new stuff, and the accuracy of Mini 14's improved dramatically.

I wonder if those crap 10/22 barrels were cut by machinery on it's last gasp.

CRC Brakleen is a great solvent for many things including firearms. Great down the bore as well as it cleans out the carbon and lead buildup...just doesn't work on the copper residue.

ATF is also great on semi-auto actions. Armalite recommends it on their M-16s if troops run out of standard-issue supplies.

I don't get why the Ruger 10/22 gets so much bad press, are they tack drivers? No however they group well enough for rabbit shooting at sensible distances with the right ammo. Mine would average 1.5inch at 50m, good enough for me.

Stovepipe is a common thing on the ruger. It’s not right to buy a new gun to upgrade the bits in order to fire smoothly.

I've heard that argument too, however, friends and I all own them, all unmodified with no issues when using good ammo. Most semis will stove pipe at some stage with crap "bulk buy" ammo. I would also hazard a guess a lot of peoples cleaning regimes are poor and a leading contributor. I'm not a staunch defender of the 10/22 as the marlins are bloody good value, just think they get a lot of ill informed bad press.

I would have gone probably 20,000 rounds between cleans on my 10/22 before the issues built up enough to motivate me to give it a clean (yeah I'm a bloody farmer).

I've had my 10/22 since about 1985; never cleaned it! It still shoots about 5 shots into an inch-ish at 50m. That's accurate enough for me for rabbits etc. I never feel it's ethically right to shoot to further than 75m with a .22 on rabbits etc. That old Ruger shot my first deer, pigs, goats, rabbits, hares, wallabies, possums, turkeys, peacocks etc etc. Never let me down :)

No WTF needed.... Let me clarify..... I shot a deer with it when I was about 18; young, dumb and thought I knew it all, as teenagers do. It was only about 15m away (a fallow doe). But it's not something I'd do now as a 57-year old.... You learn as you grow older ;)

And 75m at a rabbit is ethically far enough for "me" to shoot a rabbit with a .22 (head shot as I don't want to waste meat or risk gut shooting it). I don't think I'm a crack shot; just average. Like I said; you learn as you grow older ;)

Semi autos can’t be beat for raw firepower. But the super-short stroke of a bolt action 22 gives them the ability to deliver surprisingly quick follow up shots.

Got rid of my semi many years ago and probably wouldn’t get another one

Its not about reliability, but the engagement of having to manually reload after every shot.
Cycling the action in front of the TV after dinner has been a major stress-relieving hobby for me. Can't see myself doing that with a semi-automatic.

Modern auto cars are probably just as reliable as manual cars, but not as fun and engaging to drive.

I became total sick of bolt action .22s. Sold my BA and now shoot two 10/22 variants, one has a KIDD barrel/trigger. cleaning (or lack of it) has been the only problem ever...

I use either or. No problems either way.

I've still got my stainless papoose but the kids hog it possuming so was looking for a second 22. Considered a 10/22 but to many people saying they can be dodgy so looked into another papoose. Marlin list them on website so spoke to local gun shop and apparently importer has them on order but doesn't know when they will arrive. I have put my name down for one so fingers crossed they turn up. Awesome little takedown 22 and mine is very accurate but not the most reliable with subs.
