    Troy Pump Action Rifle

    Hi guys and gals,
Who here has pre-ordered a Troy PAR? What calibre did you choose and where are you getting it from?

I pre-ordered mine about 9 weeks ago from Gunsnz, the guy seems nice, but the situation of landing the order from Troy seems chaotic at best...

Im curious about your rational for buying one. A friend has had a par for several years whilst I had my ar now gone, so a while ago I thought to accept his offer and have a good go with it. We put up a jungle lane 10 targets from 10 to 100 metres at home and I ran it with my bolt action and then the par, and did some positional shooting.
I went away undecided, then sent him this "review"
Some time later we had a shoot off he had his par and I used a brand new ruger that had just been sighted in. 5 rounds prone unsupported at a 12 in gong at 100 m. The par finished 2 seconds ahead of the ruger 11 versus 13 but only achieved 2 hits against the ruger 3. The ruger was less than perfect, scratchy bolt and two difficult feeds. It proved nothing but was fun.

My reasons for acquiring one are - if I don't buy it I'll end up with nothing but Bolt actions and I like some diversity in my safes. I have loads of. 223 and no rifle for it anymore. I didn't hand in many of my AR accessories or my magazines. I love the AR ergos and general appearance.
I'm not really big on levers, and the Remington pump is expensive for something that looks like something out of the bargain bin at the warehouse with QC issues to boot. While I was a little hesitant, for the reasons above it seemed like a good choice. The alternative I considered was a Tikka T3X but I just couldn't get excited about another Bolt action... At this point I hope the Troy works out to be a good addition.

They're still on their website holdover, there's clearly something I'm missing here, what happened?

Thanks for the explanation for your choice. One thing you might not be aware of is that the Troy's chamber is fluted to assist with extraction so if you reload funny looking cases will be the result that need full length sizing every time.

I read the Gen2 version is not so hard on cases?

The Troy is an accurate rifle as it is free float with no gas system attached. It is fast firing from the standing position but not so much from the prone position, maybe something could be modified on them to give them an alternative straight pull lever on the side of the receiver. You can put a bipod on the front I think if you get one of those troy alpha picatinny adapters.

After what's happening with the Kriss I wouldn't be surprised if they get stopped at the border and not allowed in.

Just be aware only some ar triggers will work in a PAR. Known ones that work are triggertech, Hiperfire 3g, and ALG. The hammer must be long enough to touch the pump release at the bottom of the receiver and as the hammer release 'robs' a bit of power out of the hammer you risk light primer strikes if you use reduced power springs.

Jmt triggers won't nor will timiny, I know as I offered them to my friend as upgrades for the average one in the par. Both occasionally misfired so I got them back and made more from them at a stealathon.

I don't know why they bother with the fluted chambers. My PAR cycles easily with full power loads and a standard chamber.

Yeah I heard that. Not much chance of getting a replacement barrel for it these days unless you get trueflite to make you one but they are pricey.

@gundoc, your opinion on the PAR, is it a worthy successor to the AR, all things considered?

Yes, they are a good option. Mine runs 0.5 MOA with 69 grain BTHP (chrome-lined 7" twist), slower than a semi but miles faster than a bolt and no need to move your head.

    Hopefully they don't get banned.

Just be good if there was some mod to make them easier to cycle while prone.
