Hi, considering joining the AR15 club. Brand new or 2nd hand, open to suggestions. I've looked at NZAR15 website but have absolutely no idea what is better than what. Price range somewhere around the 2k mark for bare gun. Any advice? NEA vs CMMG vs Spikes vs Custom built vs 2nd hand Whindam Weaponry etc?

I shoot primarily from a truck - it is heavy, and a bitch to walk with for a day, especially with the scope on it!

If you can try out an AR or two with different barrel lengths it would be good. 12.5 is a short barrel for .223. You will notice quite a velocity drop in comparison with 16 or 18 inch. Lots of noise and flame without the suppressor also :D OK I cant say thats a problem for me. My 7.62x39 AR makes quite a flame :on fire:Quote:

There is absolutely no reason for an AR to be stupidly heavy. The problem is that most manufacturers put a heavy profile barrel on them as a default. A light weight barrel makes them totally bareable for people who obsess over weight.

The model 1 is a bit cheaper as the A2 sights (not shown) cost a bit.
AIL stock which I love, well worth trying out IMHO.
The 77gr hp, PMC with a crappy scope does well, so it will do better with a good scope and bipod.

We'll have dpms ar15's for under $1500 an dpms ar10's for under $2000 in a few weeks.
Never heard of DPMS before. Where are they in the ranks compared to NEA/CMMG etc?

In fact the only real problems Iv seen with any ARs have been caused by the operators poorly modifying them.
When put together well (and this isn't rocket science) they are all totally awesome.
Things to consider...
Don't buy a heavy long one. (I don't care what anybody says, any .223 over 7lb bare is just so dumb)
You will need to get an aftermarket trigger on all but a very few brands as they all kinda suck.
They will all shoot Minute of angle with select ammo and come damn close with everything else regardless of barrel length.
... AR15 equals super cool multi use rifle... as long as it's light weight!!

I run a 20inch rifle as I wanted the sight radius, slightly lower kick and M16A2 look alike for service rifle shooting but I have to lug that bit of extra barrel weight. If I was carrying it a lot hunting I'd sconsider a thin pencil barrel and 16 or 18inch length. Shorter than 16inch might be "sexy" but they carry dis-advantages.
I would not buy a Gunshitty Norinco, and from what I have seen AR's on TM are simply too expensive for what might be someones elses f***ed up gun, you might as well buy new. At least avoid someones "parts" gun mess. Technology on the AR's is also advancing fast, so an AR15 that has been on a gunshop shelf for 2 or 3 years but price tagged at 2015 prices is one to pass on you can do a lot better on line in terms of price and "newness' and the guys on line all shoot and know these things very well so I think you would get the best advice there.

Imo the best thing to do with an AR is assemble one yourself with good parts to meet your own requirements, it's cheaper than an assembled rifle and any good off the shelf parts work fine, it's like lego to assemble, most factory ARs don't have the ideal combo of features imo. Lightweight barrels, slim tube hand guards, good triggers, adjustable gas blocks etc don't come in factory rifles and it's dumb to buy a factory rifle and then lose money replacing unsatisfactory parts.
Spikes, Stag, CMMG, etc are all much the same thing

Hmm l get where you are coming from but we don't have a store where you can get all the bits. You have to source them here there and even the USA which of course costs you in freight. If you are mechanically minded its pretty simple with a few basic tools. I would recommend a set of punches, allen keys, upper receiver vice block and armorers wrench. All of these can be purchased on TM and are worth having if you are an AR owner anyway. The cheapest armorers wrench you can find will do the trick. Often rails come with their own barrel nut spanner and all you need is a 1/2" torque wrench.
We occasionally offer to build kits customers buy off us at no charge if they are present in store - and we have time. Theres not a lot that can wrong if you do it yourself though.

I've had a Bushmaster XM-15, NEA15 & Spikes tactical.
BM, wish I kept it for SR, only issue was some FTF's all caused by shitty 5 rnd magazines. Nice upper lower fit, who cares its not mil spec.
NEA, never missed a beat, wish I had kept that too, again only with some shitty 5 rnd magazines could not load them unless bolt was back.
ST, fit between upper and lower not as tight as the above two, but was my favourite, and still is.

As for the Chinese Norinco's, all reports I have read say they shoot well, just a little rough around the edges... they just should be priced accordingly, then you really would get what you paid for.
The problem with colt is they have some stuff that is labelled colt and priced as such but isn't Really Colt
Do NZAR15 allow mixing and matching of parts to build a custom gun? I see they have several AR15 Kits but they aren't quite what I want. I like the look of Spikes Tactical lowers with the red pictograms and NEA FDE uppers..
