Visiting American needs some advice

Hey all,
as the header says I am an American visiting New Zealand to stud for a few months and while I am here I want to do some target shooting and possibly a hunt later (ideally for tahr so you know what im working with).
Anyways I just got my license and visited a few shops in Christchurch today. Put one rifle on hold at each shop and am tring to decide quickly so I dont waste anybodys time. Basically im only looking at used guns because the prices here are killing me when it comes to new guns. So if yall would give me some input on either of these rifles and their prices, it would be greatly appreciated. I am really looking for something that wont be too expensive, but accurate and powerful enough for a large mammal out to 300 yards. I am also going to use m time in NZ to enjoy the availability of suppressors so will have the rifle threaded and fit for one.
The first gun is a Parker Hale in 270. Safari model with a light blued barrel. No threading, somewhat worn finish, okay crown. Sling and scope included. Sling is nothing special. Scope has no markings, either brand or magnification. $250
Second gun is a BSA in 270. Wood stock, bull stainless barrel (supposedly only 9 rounds through it), tasco 3-9x40 mounted, no sling. Marked around 600-650 (cant remember which exactly), salesman offered to thread it and sell it for 600.
Any ideas?

Go with the Parker Hale . My first ever centre fire was a second hand old shitter of a Parker Hale in .270 and that rifle is still a good'n.

I tend to agree with both of cams comments. Bull barrel...you won't want to bring it back with you after a day hunting tahr
And there is no harm is asking to test fire it

And if you have a few pingers left after buying it maybe pick up another scope second hand that is decent, that is if the one on it is crap.

First ever 270 I shot was a BSA and was a good rifle.

I'd leave the Parker hale in the shop at $250 I would think its probably worn out & flinging bullets all over the place.
You wouldn't even get a reasonable scope for that money honestly.

....when a deal is too good to be true.... Still that PH is worth checking out if they're agreeable. If it can do a group of 2" at 100y then it still might be ok.

2 inches You are joking at 100. Ready to chuck off a wharf if that's as good as gets Paddle for the kayak maybe sorry that's not worth buying for a 270 they way better than that..

I think you can do better than both of those choices, the BSA may be a good rifle, but with a bull barrel its now no longer a hunting rifle anymore, too heavy, so that one is out, and the Parker Hale for $250...at a gunshop that means the barrel is screwed.

Somebody go through Trademe for our yank friend and locate a good deal for him. (I can't because I just went through all the trademe rifles already and I am at work...)

Whats the budget? And where are you located Ewlyon?

Indicated he went around Chch stores.

I have a suppressed Savage 110 in 308 in the safe that is overdue for a walk. Shooting about 30mm groups at 100m if that is any use. Has an old Weaver 4x(32??) scope that is missing the rubber eyepiece. Not for sale but you could certainly borrow for a while.

I hate to recommend 270 but tikka t3 270 | Trade Me could be a good buy
Decent scope included
Couple of packets of ammo included ($80 saving already)

And you will be able to flick it for the same price you pay for it when your done, easilly.

Im looking to bring it back to US when i leave so selling it or borrowing one isnt really one of m options yet, except for the supprssor which i wont be able to bring back.
I figure the bull barrel on the BSA will be a bit heavy but the rifle weighs about the same as my sporter Arisaka back home and is shorter to boot. My budget is a little flexible but I wouldnt want to go over 1000 with a suppressor. Also only looking in the Christchurch area as I dont have a car.
Right now im thinking go with the BSA just because the barrel is newer and the two-tone look is something I dont have in a rifle.
Plus im planning on taking some other international students out to shoot as most of them have never fired a gun and they need some education in gun safety and the shooting sports, some extra weight to the gun might prevent them getting too recoil shy.

And I have a girl back home so any stud action would get me in a bit of trouble :)

Guns are so cheap in the usa. Why would you want to buy one here and take it back?

You might be better off hiring one from Gunworks, then sorting one out at leisure . . . . .

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I ended up going with the BSA (which i actually saw today was marked at 850) but I got a buddy here from America also looking at getting one so im gonna pass this on to him and hope he finds a good deal.
