There are so many options that fit the bill for what you want especially out to $1k. You dont have to spend anything like that if you dont want to tho to do what you ask.
The good old Weaver Grand Slam or even the newer SuperSlam do a great job (i have both). The Weaver Superslam 3-15x42 was my first dialup scope a few years back, it works super well, and has turrets that you have to pop up first before you dial them, which i really like.
I too have had a great run out of Vortex's (some people poo poo them however) but even the cheaper 4-12 Diamondbacks to the Viper HST and PST's they have always done me well, mid to long range hunting and Long range gong smashing. I dial them all. And i can see the target well enough to kill stuff out there well beyond distances that the average hunter shoots stuff. Things dont always need to carry a high price tag or certain name to work well eh. I have 6 or 7 of them on various rifles and have not had a problem to date.
Some guys love Leupold, and a VX3 with CDS dials should see you right too. You dont need 20 or 24x power to shoot deer at 500 yards.
Many many more options in the sub $1k budget.
