Is it the law now that firearms need to be transported in a case like this?
No.
Not visible is the requirement if firearm is disabled (e.g. bolt removed). If unable to be disabled (e.g. leveraction) it needs a locked case or trigger lock.
I think airlines require a locked hard case - but that ain't law.
