    Weatherby Vanguard trigger conundrum

Hi Guys. One or two may I recall I got put onto a great buy here. It was, great value for money. Had a broken bolt stop screw which I've since resolved. Easy enough in the end. Let it soak in CRC overnight then used a jewellers screwdriver to gently turn it out. I got it for a young fellah and he's stoked. However the trigger is the conundrum. It's a bit like pulling a billy goat backwards. I've no intention of letting him shoot groups in its current condition. Flinch inducing.Three options; tu tu with it myself ( dodgy with that safety block ) replace it with a Timney or Rifle Basix. Does any one have any comment on the latter two options. Cheers

The weatherby Vanguard is just a rebranded Howa 1500 (great rifles). I have the latter and put a timney trigger in it. Very happy with it. Adjusts down to 1.5 pounds and safety mechanism is excellent.

I have a timmney on my howa 1500 (same as a vanguard) absolutely brilliant.
In the past I have tutu'd with a previous howa 1500 trigger and was able to get acceptable trigger pull by triming 1 coil at a time off the spring.
If memory serves me correctly I took 2 coils off.

Had the same problem with a Weatherby I use to have, got sick of trying to sort the trigger, so just bought a Timney. Totally different rifle. Well worth the money.

My 308 started life looking identical to that bargain!

    However.

I got Cobus at Guntech nz to tune the trigger.

She is now a fantastic 2.5lbs pull and is a right honey to use.

I'd get it tuned by a Gunsmith personally as it's a fair bit cheaper than buying a custom trigger.

    Hope this helps

Final option to consider is fitting a Howa HACT trigger. Really good and adjustable . As long as you like two stage triggers.

Problem is there is a difference between the receivers of the old Weatherby Vanguard and the newer Howa's that use the HACT trigger. The V cut into the receiver is a different size and the trigger pack screw hole is slightly out between the two. I found this out by attempting the above.

I must have been lucky as cant fault trigger on my new Howa at all...it does feel like shit if safety is on....but to shoot is fine and dandy.
I would get gunsmith to see what can be done.

timneys are awesome but I have used an early Weatherby trigger(pre HACT) tuned up by Rod Woods that was fantastic
the only complaint I have about timneys are they are expensive

That is interesting. I had swapped a gunsmith tuned 1500 trigger into a Vanguard once. I don't recall it being an issue. It may have been the later "II" model.
