Think four rounds is ideal in most situations, but as others have said, you only need one, or maybe two. It's reassuring to have a couple spare though. Beyond that, there's a bit of psychology at play. Like the fisherman who is worried about running out of bait and takes a metric ton or the duck hunter who carts 50 rounds around "just in case"!
