Thread: What to buy? Light weight, 300m accuracy, cheap ammo, pref chassis stock

If you had some money, what would you purchase?

I'm looking for a new toy, something light which I can carry miles up the rivers etc. Somthing that will accurately drive tracks at 200-300m and take out a red. Decently cheap calibre?

I was looking at trying to get a 6.5prc, checked out the ruger precision but was too heavy at 11lb bare rifle. Then I looked at a browning xbolt, with a mdt chassis. But may be months away. Christensen arms 6.5 prc , but again could be a while wait.

What would you all go for? Throw some build at me you would like to create which would fit the above.

Are 6.5 creedmor on par with a 6.5prc etc

300m is not that far almost all 308 based cased 6.5 mm and up will work. The harder parting is shooting accurate at that range (still very doable). The 6.5prc is likely over kill. Any of the 6.5 Creed, 260, 7mm08, 308, etc will work. Just pick one. The earlier ones being likely easier to shoot accurately.

I never really understand why people use bare rifle weight, I have never carried one in the bush bare...I had a STW built and it weighed 4.75 kg fully tooled up with scope, full mag, sling and bipod...and is a tack driver at distance.

I'd look at one of these


A mate has one and it does a clever leaf with factory pmc ammo.



I know it's not a chassis rifle but for short, lightweight and accurate.

There is the new Mauser M18 that has been released in 6.5 Prc, but not that light either.

Yeah, I have a xbolt maple/synthetic in 308 for a Bush rifle, a browning.hells canyon in 7mmrm, for longer stuff, a tikka t3x in 300wm on a dpt long range chassis. But want somthing nice for hunting, bush and long shots , somthing that I can possibly fold up, will be a good match for a xp50 thermion scope... another toy really.

That range is dead easy for the 308, cheap ammo from belmont, plenty of rifle choices.

Go hell for leather- model 7 in 7mm08.

Get it reamed out and the bolt modified to 7mm Saum.

Lots of guys here will swear by the 7SAUM

I'm in the same position and I tried a Model 7 and loved it. However for some reason I'm keen on the Howa Mountain rifle too; but haven't been able to handle one. and; if I can find one now they are discontinued. I'm going either 7mm08 or 308. Or then do I just not overthink it and bet one of the shorter barreled Ruger American 308s? 1st world problems......

Cheap ammo =308/762x39/223
300m would be at the limit on reds for the last two.

Im building a 6.5 prc but not on a chassis.
