There no point trying to give them shit because they cant hear anything for a week!

I had a 7RM that i wanted to cut down. So researched the fuck out of it and a 20" 7RM will only do the same as a 20" 284 or 280 7-08 308 but with more recoil and muzzle blast (fixed by suppressor) and waste powder. So i sold my 7RM and got a 308. This is just what i read. im not a ballistics expert but i did troll the net looking for an excuse to do it, but no one said it was a good idea and they were doing better than smaller cals

A tikka with a limbsaver recoil pad is fine to shoot. The factory Tikka pad has almost no padding but the limbsaver is awesome. What rifle do you have at the moment? Going to a new rifle just before a trip is not a good idea. A 708, 308 or the like will easily get you to 400-500 yds with the right projectile and scope.
I would put my money into a good scope before I bought a new rifle for long range shooting.

Cant rate limbsavers high enough. have one on my 264 and dont feel a thing could shoot all day and be comfortable. everyones quick to suppress or muzzle brake when a fraction of the cost a limbsaver is all that is needed.

Do you have a rifle currently? You don't actually need a magnum to easily shoot Tahr or Chamios...

I have a 243 tikka mate would a 30/06 be efficient enuf?? I'm open to suggestions as I'm I don't really wanna but rifle just for long distance....

I believe some of the biggest Tahr in NZ have been shot with a 243. You wont have an issue using it on nannies but you may or may not have issues with large bulls in the rut (now). If you want a new rifle the by all means go ahead but IMHO you don't NEED it. Anything larger than your current 243 obviously has more "knock down" but you have to make sure you can get the bullets on target as placement is just as important...

Tell that to the guys running 18 inch 7mm saums. Im planning an 18 inch 284

I have a Sako A7.. Doesnt recoil as much as people say...Believe me when you have a game on your scope sights and you let it crack..you wont even feel that you shot it...

Have they been armour plating Tahr again?, shit I'll have to stop knocking them down at+ 400 with my 2506 and get an anti aircraft gun instead!

Get a 7mm Mag because you want one, not because you "need" one to shoot Tahr.

Remington DM, action bedded, trigger lightened and load developed with the 162 a max.
26 inch barrel with gunworks suppressor, comes with inch and lapped 30mm rings and 40 162 amax handloads.....

Just need a scope and your away.

Hi David,
The T3 lites in magnum calibre can be a bit severe for some guys. Loosing view of target after the shot is also a common problem with very light rifles.
One of my Tresamax or Quatromax muzzle brakes fitted to 7mm Mag will reduce recoil levels to about the same as a .22-250 in a rifle of the same weight, and will provide excellent muzzle stability for follow-up shots if required. I fit a lot of my brakes to sakos and Tikkas. As long as you are open country hunting without a dog and have time to fit earplugs before shot, then a brake is the way to go. No need to prune the barrel. One of my brakes will provide approx. double the recoil reduction and muzzle control compared with a suppressor, confirmed in comparison tests with brakes and cans on the same rifle, on a proper testing machine. Once you have fitted a brake the LS recoil pad becomes optional - best only if you want to increase the stock length as well.

Or learn to control recoil by good shooting technique.

A 30/06 will do it. Use a good 150 - 165gr projectile. Have you got a range finder?

I have a kimber montana 300wsm with a terminator muzzle brake on it. Rifle is super light to carry and really nice to shoot even without the brake. My old 700sps 7mm mag used to boot harder. I use 180gr sst's for everything from the bush to the open tops. I would buy another kimber without thinking twice about it
