Thread: What front rest do you use at the range

Debating whether or not I should buy a bipod or a proper front rest.

I have a home made one that is not the greatest. The rifle pulls to the left after a shot as the top swivels. Everything I've shot has been dead and hit the right spot but always good to have better gear.

I was thinking of either a second hand Harris or something from 55six.

I like sand bags front and rear I have a big 20kg sack of sand that’s left on the bench at our farm range
Then use a rear bag I think its a Caldwell one
If if im going to another range I have a smaller lighter front bag i use

I use a bipod or a breadbag inside another full of crusher dust. Works ok.
And the same but smaller for a rear rest.

I prefer bipods, as you can carry it in the field with you.
Bags are really only good at the range, but a bipod does double duty.

I use what I shoot with in the field, a bipod on my tops rig and day babag for my allrounder/bush guns.

i'm relatively new to the long range thing, but heres what i did.
i emptied out lots of silica gel capsules from packaging, now this stuff attracts water so i stuffed the whole lot into a "pleasure balloon" and then put it inside a couple of layers of old socks.
so now i can shoot from a wooly sock wrapped around a condom full of packaging material. all i can say is it does work and costs nothing, though explaining to the mrs why you are purchasing condoms could be tricky

Yeah I may just get the missus to make some more rice bags up. The nzda range uses awkward benches so prone is usually easier I find.

Which bipod? Starting to shoot further so was going to keep an eye out for a second hand harris

That shouldn't be too hard for me ha

I use an Atlas PSR Bipod. Nothing wrong with the Harris bipods though.
Of importance, imo, is if you get a bipod that can swivel side to side, make sure it can be tightened up real good so it doesent want to roll from side to side easily. I prefer it to be stiff enough to hold the rifle level itself, so you are not trying to keep it level yourself whilst trying to aim etc.

Just use whatever you're gonna use on the hill
With the condoms, are they new, used or just reused??

oh trust me brand new, the used ones would be too weak from the strain to handle a 22lr

I use homemade sandbags for testing different loads and then sight in off a well stuffed dad bag as that what I shoot off if I have a longer shot.

I have that. But my base is welded but the top is bolted which is why it swivels when I shoot.
