About LinkBackseach to there own on that but I wouldn't buy a lower power scope then struggle to see a animal in certain light at 300yds just me though,my 4.5.x14x40 can do anything from helping me shoot deer from 30yds in the bush to over 320yds on another face so I think go the higher vari magnification and like you say and has been told to me aswell is buy good glass.
