You depart with mighty boasts, but you come back having done little.
Sounds like a typical hunting trip !

The ‘paxarms’ stamp on top makes me think it’s likely a tranquiliser gun or similar. Possibly one dart loaded in each side, may be able to fire each independently?

Looks like a Paxarms dart gun that they trialed back in the 80's - two darts trailing electrical wires and zapped 'em. They also trialed darts containing tiny radio trackers, but it appears that didn't work too well either. I think Paxarms is still manufacturing dart guns for export, somewhere in South Canterbury.

did they trial a 2 barrel net gun??? barrels too straight for that so ,as others have said, probably for the electrical circiut type of capture...
someone with copy of the "chopper boys" by Rex Forrester will probably be able to see if its in there....or the helicopter hunters by same author...I seem to recal they had most methods shown.

It did indeed fire two darts with trailing wires and an electrical impulse sent to immobilise the animal for live capture. They had a few deaths with deer (they have a very sensitive nervous system) and the system faded away. Colin Murdoch invented many ingenious things apart from the Paxarms system, one of which was a childproof pill bottle that saw limited success. I knew him quite well in the '70's and spent some time is his factory in Timaru whilst deciding whether to accept his offer to manage the outfit and utilise my action design. I chose to stick with my own business.
