Thread: What scope would you.........

recommend for a .375 Ruger ?
Been looking around and have not firmed up on any possibilities. Prefer something pre-used / loved and in a non ridiculous cost bracket 'cos the rifle most likely will get rough and tumble use. Don't want to cry too much if the scope suffers terminal injuries. Already have a few Leupolds and Swarovskis I just love but I'm open to alternatives for the Ruger. Optical quality has to be reasonable with some low light potential with overall compact dimensions preferred with objective size max up to 42 to 44 mm. Either 25 or 30 mm tube is OK. I think I would go with a variable but zoom factor of 6X probably max.

@30.06king what are you intending using the 375 for ?

It's plenty of gun for anything in NZ
But likely a decent heavy unit and more suited to a larger target so you don't need a lot of magnification

Eye relief is going to be a huge consideration and a scopes ability to handle repeated heavy recoil

Personally I would go with a VX2c 2-7 or VXiii 2.5-8. Both hard to break

As above. I’d also bung a Leupold 1.5-5 Vari-Xiii on top to see how it looked. Best of both worlds. 1.75-6 Leupolds are thin on the ground and fairly sought after I believe. Personally I use either a 1.5-5 or 2.5-8 as my preferred.

It's a backup to a .375 H&H and just a caliber I am interested in mucking around with. Most likely it will be a heavy goat slayer with the odd pig and deer thrown in. Could see limited use on an overseas hunt. Mostly out to 200 yds but might sometimes attempt longer shots if load development goes well. Yes, eye relief, recoil proof and cost are all important. Now I'm also thinking top end magnification of 8X probably works better for just a little more shot placement assistance than 6X. Thanks for your comments.

What about a plain vanilla 4 power Leupold or other. Cheaper than a variable and bull strong. Never on the wrong power.

From one curmudgeon to another, I hear you. Having been there many moons ago before complete seduction by the magic of power selection I think a variable is the answer. Although on 4X I consider myself adequate to 200 yds I mostly feel that little bit happier with the ability to enlarge the image if I want to. If I was restricted to fixed power it probably would be 4X.

My 2c :

Had a Burris Fullfield 2.5 - 10 on my No.1 in .375 H&H, worked well but reticle too "busy" for what I needed.
Swapped to an older Leupold 2-7x32, pefection!

Got a 1.5-5 vx3 loopy (think it's a 3) on the 416.
Good scope, had 50-60 shots through it and never shifted.
I will say it isnt as clear as say my burris 3200. @Moa Hunter has looked through it and knows what I mean
If I bought it again I'd get a firedot.
To be honest treat it like a 270 and buy whatever scope youd have on that.
I reckon you will be surprised how flat it shoots if you do a 3" zero at a hundy
On the african forums a lot of people use 2-8s, 3-9s on qr bases on a bunch of heavy hitters including double rifles.
Leica, trijicon etc etc.
They are all a bit out of my budget though

Hi TP, Yep would love to do that. Trouble is I looked in my wallet first and the necessary folding stuff just aint there at the moment . Besides I would have to pamper that lovely Swaro so much I might be too frightened to use the rifle.

yip loopy vari power as low as you can go..pig plex even..... you cant really go wrong as it will never loose much value and lifetime guarantee if heaven forbid any issue does crop up. pity the wonderful fixed 3x is no longer made.

Ruger M77 Hawkeye, Stainless, Left Hand. No longer in factory configuration as had it rebarreled and replaced the stock. Sadly I don't have it, yet. Currently in the UDA awaiting shipment to NZ. But I'm told it will be sent soon, whenever that is. I won't know how recoil compares until I get to shoot it. Some tell me it kicks a little harder than a .374 H&H. We'll see.....
