Given a choice and also what is available in NZ what would be a good bush basher.
257 Roberts, 257 Weatherby, 260 Rem, or a 264?
I want a 6.5x55 but if one was to get a rifle from the states where the 6.5 never really took off what would you do?

7mm rem mag
Of the above choices what would you choose!
I smell a rat :wtfsmilie:... Don't you have a mate bringing a rifle over in a month or so? ;) Is he not going to be taking it back with him?

I quite like the idea of the 260, seems a nice all-rounder. Pretty much mirrors the 6.5x55 for ballistics etc but is a short action.
6.5 Creedmore looks cool too (pretty similar but longer neck for high-BC projectiles to fit better), but ammo/brass could be hard to find here.
Any info on this .264
+1 260
Why would you want an big heavy magnum its its going in the bush? you want a short light rifle
my 2c
If you're happy with a long action you could consider a 6.5-284 as well.
Is that an off the shelf cal?
Just jokes i am just chancing my arm
Nah not what i want then.
Gona check the .264 out see if its what i need.
They all seem like odd bush calibers to me.
When my little 6.5wsm is mean short light in close to out far,

308 and 120gr TSX would be a good bush gun. If my barrel doesn't sell I may end up doing that.
are you reloading mate? I dunno what its like there but in aus unless your reloading a lot of shops wont have a lot of those calibers in stock all the time and if your on a trip or in a hurry that can be quite a pain. I love the less cliche' calibers and even though I reload I was put off by the fact of how hard brass and projectiles can be to find. Go one of them if you want but I honestly think your better going for a similar common calibre e.g. 7mm08, 270, 243, 7mm rem mag
I will be reloading at some stage but at the moment have no need as i brought most of Gavins ammo of him.
The .260 could be the go, i can tell you the .243 and .270 and not on the list for consideration, recoil is a big factor here as i want this rifle to be usable for my boy in a few years time.
Ah i see the reason now!
Otherwise 308 338fed 44mag etc would be my bush recomendations.
Tho 243 if anything should recoil less than 260

Had a .243 Winchester feather weight, jeez that think had some boot, being a feather weight wouldnt of helped but still.
Most of the rifles listed are gonna boot you harder in the shoulder than a .243...even a lightweight one.
If you want to reduce recoil so your boy can use them your probably going to be looking at using lighter weight projectiles, a heavier rifle and/or putting a silencer on to reduce felt recoil.
Any of the cartridges based on the 308 case (243/260/7-08/308) are going to be readily available, reasonably tame on recoil with the right loads/rifle, suitable for a short action/barrelled bush gun.
Out of the cartridges you mentioned, the 260 would seem the sensible choice and would also be quite versatile too.
Mike uses a 260 and the kids load is with 100gr projectiles and they have dropped reds no problems with little recoil....then you use 140gr pills :D
That sounds like the go
In all reality 129/130 gr is enough for 260...... the 100gr Nosler does very well but because of the speed it waists a bit of meat and 130gr doesn't kick much more.... but if recoil is an issue 100gr loaded slower is a sweet kids load, I have seen goats taken beyond 400 yards with a 18-20" barrel (I think its 18") with ease and seen gongs hit at 780 yards with 260 and 130 gr pills with a great hit rate (3 from 3 with a new shooter once dialed in) :)
My 10 year old brother shoots my other brothers Steyr mannlicher 243 no worries and they have a bit of kick for a 243 so I don't think you'd have to worry about that. Similarly 7mm08 has next to no recoil, actually read a story in a NZ hunting mag last year about a 7 year old shooting his first sika with a 7mm08. As has been said your 260 will kick noticeably more than a 243 and it'll kill the same animals
What would the kick be like on a suppressed .308?
piece of string Toby :D depends on the rifle weight, stock fit, projectile, load, etc, etc.
So here is an update, after some time trawling around on Tardme i come across a Remington 770 in 7-08 with a buy now of $400 it was passed it twice at that so i asked if he would accept $350 and he said yes so i went and inspected it today and brought it home, less than 50 rounds through it and minimal surface rust so an easy clean up a bed and float and a scope, bingo bango new bush gun.
Spend today in the man cave working on it.
Cant go wrong that!!!
Got the plastasine in ready for bedding now just need to find the info sheet with the ratio of compound to hardner which i had but have since lost:pissed off:
