Hey guys killing some time in the shed and the rifle needed a clean . Thought I'd get the kitchen scales out.
Winnchester model 70 lightweight
270 :thumbsup:
Vx3 4-14 cds
22 inch barrel
Weight without suppressor 3454g
Weight with dpt suppresor 3693g
Weight with brake 3575g
Hunting weight suppresor/sling/harris copy bipod/ 4306g
*Mag empty
(That's made me want a lighter bipod/sling lol)
What is considered to be a light weight rifle?

Less than 3kg ready to go is a very nice weight, especially with a suppressor. That doesn't include a bipod as they cock up the balance etc.
Likewise with time on my hands the other day I chucked a few favorites over the scales - all with slings but no suppressors/bipods etc:
Zastava 223 with Sightron 4-16 - 3440gm (7.6 lbs)
Brno Model 21 8x57 with Weaver SS 2.5-10 - 3940gm (8.7 lbs)
Mauser K 6.5x47 with 2.3-7 Kahles - 3380gm (7.5 lbs)
Lithgow LA102 308 with Athlon 4.5-27 - 4070gm (8.9 lbs) - surprising given this a cross-over type with a reasonably big scope
Savage/Stevens 200 in 223 with 2.5-10 Minox 3340gm (7.4 lbs)
Rem Model 7 in 260 with Boyds laminated stock and VX3 2.5-10 3285gm (7.25 lbs) - this stock needs taken to with a bloody big rasp, might get close to 3000gms with such treatment
I recently collated information posted by forumites on pack contents and weights - mostly from threads back several years to 2015, and back then most of them were carrying over 4000gm of rifle and scope

Wheres the most common place to loose weight? Just weighed the stock at 795g after having a google the McMillan edge is 635g it's a bit but not the difference I thought

I always thought it odd as the book weight for them is up over 9. Don't know why mine is so light-it certainly wont help soften the recoil that's for sure

Bare rifle = "6lbs and under" is a common rule of thumb to define light weight.
Too many variables in scopes, rings, suppressors, etc when you start adding those in. Choice of scope will have a significant bearing on final all up weight.
My lightest weight deer rifle is a Rem Model 7 in 260, it's totally factory stock with factory 20" barrel but has a Wildcat Composites Fibreglass stock fitted.
It has Talley rings and a 4-12x40 scope. It weighs 2,883 grams without ammo.
The stock has a length of pull thats quite a bit too long for me so it will be cut down closer to factory LOP which will reduce weight a tad further.

110 action, in a factory older Savage plastic stock - the version with internal mag. used to have a 270 barrel on it, but I cut my original 7-08 factory barrel to 14, and re-profiled it to a pencil (0.625).
Leupy VX3 3.5-10 CDS with Aluminas on top.
Scope & caps probably 400 grams. DPT can is 200 grams, so bare rifle would be 2.5 kg
It is nicely balanced as well. Quite a few of the ultralight rifles I've handled are seriously unbalanced.

Savage 16 lightweight hunter with 18" barrel + DPT overbarrel suppressor and Bushnell Elite 3-9x40, including bolt and empty mag = 3.31kg / 7.3lb total.
From memory it was around 2.5kg / 5.6lb bare.

cz527 223 16inch barrel, dpt magnum suppressor could lose a bit here with non magnum suppressor, redfield 2-7 scope, rings, bolt in and mag in = 3.216kg 7.09lb rifle was 2.69kg / 5.94lb factory.
My current deer rifle tikka 6.5x55 with scope bolt and mag is 3.7kg happily carry that when i get a chance too ..
My next 223 will be under 3kg

If you want a genuinely light rifle you have to accept the small gains everywhere and add them up, and start from a light base action. Can't generally get a super light rifle just by changing one thing although stock is often the single biggest saving (e.g. Model 7 plastic stocks are approx 12 kilograms and a stug is 600gm)Quote:

As said earlier, to have a light rifle you have to start with a light action.
The Winchester 70 is an heavy action, as well as the Howa and the tikka 595 or worse 590.
Kimber, Forbes , Remington 7 and the old anschutz/krico are good base for starting a lightweight rifle build.
Tikka t3 and Remington 700 are in between. The older Sako 579 were good as well.
