Just wondering if a dud rifle's covered by the consumer guarantee act. A semi auto I bought less than a year ago has suddenly gone from minute of meat groupings to total shit and won't hold zero. When I pulled it apart it looks like parts have been scraping other parts. I've emailed the distributor but just wondering if any one else has been in the same situation?

My understanding is that the Consumers Guarantee Act applies to everything purchased from a retailer/dealer. Cant see why a firearm should be exempt
Simply my opinion - If what you say is correct then the item has likely failed due to faulty manufacture/materials. Not due to use or abuse.
Even the most meagre of warranties should cover that, especially failing in less than a year..
The CGA applies to anything you buy, really, and states something along the lines of goods must be fit for purpose and must last a reasonable period of time. For something like a rifle, excluding being shot out, a year is nowhere near a reasonable period of time!
The difficulty may be in proving that it was actually faulty and if that caused the failure.
Its a Ruger, so if the NZ distributor gives you grief, go straight to head office in the USA.
Have you checked the rings, mounts & tried another known scope ?
Real dumb stuff can happen in that area even with "good" brands....

I thought the Mini 14/30s had a reputation for being tough on scopes, hence many owners put an aftermarket recoil buffer in, but as you say, the irons are all over the place too.
A rifle does not suddenly 'go bad' without good reason. The most common cause of such complaints is barrel damage, usually at the muzzle. A drop of rain in the muzzle can cause a bulge when fired, and it is very difficult to detect without a set of bore gauges that go up in 1/4 thou (.00025") increments. A mild muzzle bulge will open groups up to the stage that are no longer 'groups' at all. Your rifle needs to be checked out by a competent gunsmith before you rush off to the agents and make a fool of yourself. Such problems can be cheaply corrected with minor shortening and recrowning. Factory warranties, and consumer protection laws, do not cover such problems.
That's good advice I'm not familiar with those rugers one thing I'd look at when a rifle of mine did a similar thing would be how the barrel is held into the receiver the barrel came loose on mine it was barely detectable
A trip to a gunsmith is in order but I'll wait to hear back from the distributer. May as well send it to one approved so to speak.
Yeah I wouldn't be having it chopped before you have talked to the distributor, if it was open for a refund or replacement it wouldn't be after a chop and recrown

I've heard the 580 series have .310. I've been running a mixture all sporting of Hornady, PPU, PMC, Barnual as I'm still trying to find a cartridge it likes. Funnily enough it's been playing up since I ran the American ammo through it.
No unfortunately. 99% of the time these are classed as second hand by the time anyone ever gets near one. And the suppliers definition of "normal use" may differ from yours significantly. Replacement is not usually an option due to the newer models being much the same as the older ones and often causes more issues than it solves, and finally all repairs are mostly at your cost as these will fall outside a very limited warranty. You can try to return them and sometimes they will accept them but that does mean they will accept fault and refunds are then even less likely.Quote:

I have heard some interesting commentaries on Mini 14/30s because they are not free floated the accuracy can be affected by movement in the stock mounts. The action is hard on scopes and recoil buffers so maybe it will move and wear the stock mounting points also? Something else to check.
Turns out it's not a dud .
Just fussy fed it some PPU and after around 30 clicks up and 13 right it was ok.

Awesome, good to see it shooting well. PPU is by far the most accurate factory 7.62 in my AR.
