I have 2 sonics. I found the center core which is stainless rusted pretty quickly, so took to leaving them where the sun would dry them out each day.
The other issue was that the baffles tended to unscrew during firing, so I got a slice of radiator hose about 20mm wide, laid it along the length of the can, and wound heat resistant magic (self amalgamating) tape around it. The baffles are held in place by external fricton. No more problems.
The baffle with the thread on it came apart on a dpt on my 300 mag after a lot of use. It was fixed no trouble.
Everything wears out.
So in summary, NOT everyone on here hates Dan Cans. Some like them.
I have one of each. That said, I'd swap my Dan Can for a DPT tomorrow but its not that much of a big deal to really worry about. 1st world problems I suppose.
I find it easy to believe ALL alloy suppressors will fail through overheating or long sustained use. If you are going to go hard on your suppressor get a stainless model like a MAE or Waitaki. Or just expect it to fail and accept.
To be simple and clear. I do not mind his suppressors. They are a fairly good design and seem to be well made (mostly) It is his service that has burnt him. If he was the only one he would get away with it and people would probably be happy. But there are companies out there that care about their customers that have products that can do exactly the same job just as well or better.
that's a bit harsh, "a fairly good design". given the levels of sound reduction they achieved in independent testing last year.
and the fact they don't have to be stripped and have the first baffle checked / replaced,
oh and the compact's have about the shortest front overhang available.
could just be that all they guys with DPT's are just pissed they did not get something else.(Pulling someone's leg here so don't hang me I speak in jest )
to be fair every design is a compromise and Dan's cans are expensive and the typical user (me) won't notice the difference a few Db makes.
but the goats I shot in the weekend ran towards me and I stopped shooting when they got to 4 mtrs away. Gen 6 compact on 358win with trailboss under some pistol bullets

Having seen one sectioned against a few others as comparison, it is not the worst design, but not the best one either. Yes they work. No argument. Better than others is debatable. Animals have run towards me when using a Gunworks and my mate had similar experiences with an MAE. Most suppressors make it very difficult for animals to identify a location for the source of the sound. Most that I have seen will choose to run away from the bullet impact as, to them, that is where something happened when they heard the sound so the associate the two and run away from that.
As for the DB testing, and whether his are truly quieter than the others, I have not yet seen any truly independent testing that would confirm this. The most comprehensive test I saw was done by Hardy staff and to find out tha the testers suppressor came out the quietest seems a little convenient to me.
Cheers timattalon, As I have only seen the insides of the Hardy and DPT in pictures and not any others I can't argue with you.
And yes true have experienced animals running towards shooters with other brands as well. I was not suggesting that it was only a Hardy thing.
However I would like to question your last comment.
My understanding was that while they did use Hardy's sound equipment and testing facilities only Rod and Rifle staff where involved with the testing and recording of data.
I will defend my decisions as to what gear I use and as the OP noted I wanted to give some support to the Hardy Cans

Animals will quite often run towards you with no suppressor or even a brake on the end....Just saying.
Man it's been a long time since I went rabbit shooting with lots of the little buggers running everywhere.
Your giving me withdraw symptoms.

This is what happened to my Hardy. Was shooting targets and only firing 3 shot groups , then removing to allow to cool. This happened on the 12th shot. A bit of a surprise when I went to remove it. My mate shooting beside me was even more surprised! I use this on two rifles but round count would be well under 1000, probably around 800. As for his service .... I emailed a couple of photos and rang. Didn't talk to Dan but the man I spoke to said send it back and we'll replace it. A few days later I received a new one. I can't complain at that. He stood behind his product and promptly. Send my swaro binos away to be fixed as something went wrong inside. That was at the beginning of April and not quite back here yet .... just saying. Perhaps they should say when you pay four times the price of good binos for really great binos, if something goes wrong it takes four times as long to get it sorted
Fair enough. I never really paid much attention to some of the there reports in the mags either. And my quarrel is not with the product. We all have the right to spend our hard earned how we want and I will not hold it against someone for buying something that I would not. We each have our own preferences and priorities. If he had repaired my suppressor (at my cost) or even simply told me how to remedy the issues, then I would have walked away happy.
Maybe he has improved his service, and I expect / hope others have had better experiences. I hope so as there seem to be a lot of Hardy cans about. I cannot really comment on what others have experienced (better or worse) as I can only comment on what I have experienced.
@Friwi
Might be him.
Thanks. I am touched:-)
Interesting test, I know this is more than a bit sad on Saturday to be doing Excel but I graphed the results. I consider weight vs sound reduction to be a good measure of performance so that's what I graphed. In a hunting rifle you want to get as much DB reduction for your added weight. The next would be durability (the next test they should have performed). Not much point in a light suppressor with good sound reduction if it goes bang after a few hundred rounds. Although some hunting rifles will never fire that many rounds.
Sorry I had to hack up the graph to make it up-loadable. Basically the labels work like this- no 1 is at the top of the list ie numbers 1 and 3=A-Tec 10= DPT 14= Hardy 25,26=ODL. These all put in great showings for weight vs dB reduction. For their weight the ODLs are amazing.

I had a Hardy AR suppressor on my 20" which I paid quite a bit for. A first Gen DPT on my mates 14.5" carbine was significantly quieter to the point we had to use ear protection for the first and not for the latter. I run a second hand DPT on my 308 and he's a absolute pleasure to deal with and will be getting more of my money.
Sorry Mr hardy based on this and other experiences with ARs I've heard of personally I won't be spending any more money with him.
fired 998 rounds through my 6.5mm dpt in less than 2 years and only given it a brush through and still going great. Way more than that in the 223 dpt.
On a mates rifle the Hardy's blew up and sent part of the suppressor back into his stock doing significant damage. Hardy didn't want a bar of it. In the end to get his money for the stock he had an independent engineer inspect it and said the thread holding the suppressor together was far too short and it was a inadequate design.
Heard of another couple crapping including one guy who had 2 bulge on his 7mm rem mag.
I currently have a gunworks that split but was fixed no questions asked. A lot of people I know have dpts including myself and have had no issues.
NEVER MIND I FOUND THE ARTICLE
I used my dpt on a 308 for f class. Generally 3 strings of 12. Also have some mighty bombs up on the farm gongs, easily in exec chess of 30 slow fire and it gets frigging hot. I did put in a stainless baffle, which I think is more to slow erosion.
It’s probably not clever on my part but it’s such a pleasure to shoot.
This thread is the first I’ve heard of dpt blowups so for forgive me for being sceptical without photos. Certainly possible I’m sure.
Pretty sure Hardy failures were the problem here not DPT
everything can fail, in most cases it is what happens afterwards that matters for a companys reputation- and some biz owners struggle with this when they start having to be responsable for what staff do as well. Some learn and some never do.
Not against them at all, owned one...it came on a rifle I bought, it did the job absolutely fine. But when you can buy a product that'll essentially do the same thing, is a bit more user friendly - take cleaning for example, for pretty much half the price, and have fantastic customer support, why would you? I have three rifles suppressed, basically that's a $1000 saving, or thereabouts ;)
