Thread: Windage adjustment on 1941 303 Lithgow

Windage adjustment on 1941 303 Lithgow

Got the standard rear military blade sight with height adjustment but no windage. No problem if standardized load only is shot to match original military ammo ballistics. Or if settled on one particular load - just tap front sight blade to set and forget.

More of a prob if switching between loads with diff point of impact.

Rifle does not warrant a pricey solution, e.g. peeps or optics etc. However the rear blade is removable with a single centre screw per pic. I was thinking of potentially replacing the fixed blade with a windage adjustable one.

    Is there any such thing?

The one of my 1911 would be ideal except its a dovetail and I like it where it is.

Anyone come up with something that works for this sit?

any decent gunsmith / Engineer could make you up a new adjustable rear sight to screw onto back of existing rear sight -looks like enough meat to do it

as long as it wasn't seized in there like one I had. broke the head off the screw and my little easy out wouldn't touch it.
Otherwise great idea. I reckon a small pistol illuminated rear sight would work well in the bush if an appropriate front blade was fitted too

It is not seized and yes, it would not be hard to fabricate something. For that matter I coukd slot the screw hole in tge original so it can be adjusted sideways. I was just wondering what, if anything others had done and if there were any "off the shelf" options, or more clever options than occurred to me

There are a lot of options for adjustable sights but they are getting harder to track down as time passes.
Canadian Ross sights were common once and fit Martinis .no 1 and 3 rifles.
Target shooters put apertures on various model wit great success.
There must be dozens or even hundreds of sights sitting in boxes and drawers all over NZ.

What you need is one of the earlier MkIII SMLE rear sight leaves, which had the deleted windage adjustable rear sight block. This feature was deleted in the rush to produce arms for WW1 - it wasn't really needed at the ranges that ruled the day on the Western Front. They are about in the wild, heck I probably have one somewhere.

Yes I thought there might be such an option. If one can still be found...
