    Fagus Sylvatica is what you are after.

    Might pay to call around the Arborist firms in ChCH and ask if they have any logs in the yard? The wood is really common for european rifle stocks but not always easy to spot considering how well it can be stained and refinnished.

    Pretty much if the stock isnt walnut its probably Beech. Sure there are a few Elm stocks kicking about but by in large Euro guns of medium quality are stocked in Beech.
