Thread: Zastava....... build........

Well after I blew up my 300wm 98 Mauser with an overloaded case of AR2208, it was time for a new Mauser for my old parts to drop onto.

When the 300 blew up I lost the action and bolt. The rest of the rifle was largely undamaged (I haven't had the barrel checked yet though) but I decided that it was time for a change in calibre.

The Zastava caught my eye some time ago. A stainless version of one of greatest bolt designs of all time makes for one durable, safe, rugged (and hopefully accurate) tool.

With so many people customising Remingtons, Tikkas, Savages etc due to a surplus in aftermarket parts, I think the Mauser gets overlooked because of the designs age. A browse through most aftermarket companies part lists usually yields just as many parts for the Mauser 98 as the others.

With a view to cutting my original 300wm weight to a minimum I had chosen or had the following done:

• Fluted the barrel, bolt and action,
• Bell and Carlson stock,
• Nitrex 3-15x42 scope,
• Timney sportsman trigger,
• Parker Hale aluminium bottom metal,
• Timney aluminium rings,
• Lightweight nylon sling.

With the Zastava, I don't have the time to get any fluting done but that may happen in the future. But all those parts just bolted straight on.
I swapped out the Nitrex for a 3-9 Redfield- being quite a bit lighter and im keen to try the ballistic reticle for a change. All up and with rubbish kitchen scales she appears to weigh around 3.4kg.

Tomorrow we'll see how she shoots.
