After multiple arm twistings a mate of mine finally agreed he would show me around a secret slice of paradise he is lucky enough to hunt on.
5am and alarm bells go off for the 3rd time, and i'm up.
After the arduous 30min journey we were greeted by complete darkness. Still better to be too early than too late in my book. In the dark we set off.
In the ever clearing light we could finally make out shapes so hugged the bush lines hoping to catch a grass thief intent on munching away just that little bit too long. 9am rolls round the suns well and truly up and we haven't seen a thing. Not to be put off we continued our stealth tree hugging up a ridgeline hoping to gain some height.
A couple hundred meters infront of us in some broken pasture i catch an ear twitch in the binos. Brilliant. With a look around i try and find another as they are apparently hardly ever alone. No luck. My offhand shooting at this sort of distance is rubbish so sitting down solves the scope swaying all over the shoulder. With the shot a couple appear from no where like only Fallow can and take off.
Shot hits high lungs and spines it at the same time, going nowhere, and on the board!
With a quick butcher we were off. a bit of a carry back to the truck but not too much drama.
Another 6 hours of trying to get a second with no luck had us back at the car at 4pm after only spooking one other.
Top day, brilliant bit of prime meat in the freezer and all within 30min of home. If only it was always this easy.
