2017 Part 2

Hi all, since I did 2017 Part 1 its only right that I follow it up so here goes...
Back in August I took a mate up to the ureweras for a few nites to try & get him onto a rusa deer, we camped out in -3deg temperatures, only warming up to 4 deg in the midddle of the day! was like being in a feezer, but there was a few animals moving about on the northern faces to keep us interested, & a roaring stag I stalked in on that bolted when I closed the gap, our last morning produced a small stag & hind right down low on a face, 30 meters out of the river, so set Paul up with the 300, range 350yds, & with a sharp crack the stag was down & we could get moving & shake the frost off, was a chunky little 6 pointer in good conditionAttachment 81037

next was a morning hunt with a workmate in the ruahines, picked a nice frosty august morning, watched some likely faces, then at 10am my binos picked up a hind & yearling coming out of the big native, my workmate got set up & despatched them with a coupla well placed shots, so we had him a coupla freezer fillers.

a month later i went for a morning walk in the kawekas, mainly to check a gamecam, came across a fat sika spiker 300yds away on a broken rocky slip, 1 shot later he was cartwheeling 7 bouncing off flaxes all the way to the bottom, resting on the edge of some nasty looking stinging nettles! He fell 300yds & was a tad beaten up but still tasted good.

next trip was mid october to ruahines with another mate, we seen a few deer out & about & got a yearling & a big velvet stag which made for a heavy trip home ;)

just before Xmas I got a weather window to go for a quick overnighter in the ruahines, got camp set up & spotted a nice stag across the valley straight away! then the wind got up! (as it does in the ruahines) and didn,t let up all nite! I woke up to calm conditions, peered out of the tent to see 4 deer 160 yds away - 3 velvet stags & a yearling, down went the little yearling with a crack & a berger insertion...

That wraps it up for 2017, hot barrels for 2018!

You were busy! Hope 2018 works out for you as well as 2017.

Sounds like a productive year with a few good adventures. Nothing like looking out the tent door and seeing deer!
