Bergara draws blood
Been a long time between hunting trips, when a mate asked if I was keen to head to coastal north Canterbury I jumped at the chance.
I got 2 yearling hinds and a 70lb boar and my mate got 1 yearling hind and yearling spiker. All much needed for the empty freezer. First deer and pig for the new bergara. Had shot a few got which was good to get the hang of the new rig. So when the 2 deer appeared at 30mtrs I had no issue putting them both to sleep.Attachment 211242

Love the chiller setup, going to have to do that myself!

Pretty simple set up really. This was a free fridge/freezer combo. If I was to do it again I would get a fridge without the freezer, more hanging room.
And the distance was supposed to be 300mtrs.

Nice bit of country up there for hunting, river mouth for salmon and whitebait.

Used to be a lot of Kahawai there too at the right time of the year. Probably Elephant fish as well as I have caught those up by the Conway so no reason for them not to be there.

Figured a few would recognise the place, neat wee hut to stay in down towards the beach. Apparently it gets busy around whitetail and salmon run time. Whilst I was dealing with the 2 deer my mate shot I got to enjoy watching 2 hinds playing on the river bed. Was pretty neat watching them play for a good 10min about 400mtrs from me. They only ran off when the quad came.

Nice country alright should be tasty venison.

Great report, thanks for posting. About 45 years ago I looked down on that exact same view, not so many deer round there in those days but quite a few pigs. As I recall we went down to the mouth and my cobbers mum (we were schoolboys) caught exactly 5 whitebait for the afternoon, although that was abnormal, usually she caught heaps!
