Big fat zero in the Kaimanawas!!!!!

Hi everyone, took an annual on Friday and headed off to the Kaimanawas, me n me mate stayed at Sika Lodge for three nights just to see what it was like!

Basic accommodation but the wood burner in the lounge was very welcome at the end of the day….

As we were located at the start of Clements Mill rd, we tried a couple of new places, behind ‘the quarry’ and off the ‘Te Iringa track’ hunting the 1000 mtr mark!

No joy and shitty weather to boot, saw some sign but no animals….

The Saturday we woke up to snow and a flat tyre!!!!! After getting that fixed and the hands rewarmed, we went to our old haunt ‘Army Rd camp’, saw animal tracks
In the snow and sign, but again no animals, went as far as the Fir tree plantation on the track, beautiful sunny weather but my forum fleece was needed all day!!!!!

Better than sitting in traffic in Auckland mate :D

+1, I know where I'd rather have been this weekend. That area is probably my favourite part of the north island.

Better out looking and learning, than sitting at home or in the pub!

Another month and there should be a few around. Hardest month of the year.

Might be a touch early for that area? Good on you for getting out.

Good keen men. Gets pretty cold in that part of the country.
Try across the road from Army Road. There is a clearing with a rock shooting "platform". Trying to think which direction it faces for the morning sun. Would have seen a lot of shivering hunters in it's time

Yeah Sako75, i now of that area, will be down there again in 6-7 weeks time!!!!

I would pick them as reasonably high to get the best sun. Anywhere you see an amount of fresh sign they won't be too far away. Conserving energy

Hard time of the year but still good to get of the house and find some new spots. If you can locate Sika at this time of the year then think of how much easier it should be once it warms up !!

It was cold in there alright. Came out today and we had snow on friday night walking in, ground was pretty white on saturday morning. Few deer around though!

At least you were out there Scouser ! Definitely colder there than where I was, even half soaked from the creek :thumbsup:
