Hey fellas,
Managed to revisit some old stomping grounds this year.
Surprisingly deer were a bit tricky to find, but we managed to track down enough to keep things interesting.
Some massive kms on hot days, but it all paid off in the end. Last day was miserable, got soaked to the core.
Amazing how the weather can change in such a short space of time in the mountains.
Shot a couple of ok chamois too, and got some really neat photos, but my SD card crapped out so lost heaps of photos and footage bugger it all.
Good trip looking back into country I hunted a lot 10 or so years back, chamois and deer are still in the same pockets...
Chased a few fallow. Saw a few nice bucks but didn't pull the trigger. They rutted hard where I hunted this year, so got to see plenty of action!
Flew into the coast and had a ball. Mint weather, plenty of deer around, and stags were roaring well.
Saw a couple of stags most days, saw a couple of really nice ones, and shot two, both pretty old fellas.
Covered a ton off country and it paid off with some really cool footage and animals seen.
I absolutely love this part of the West Coast for deer hunting, hard to beat on an action packed nice day!
Hit some local public land bush, where I did most of my hunting as a young tacker. Forgot how shit the bush was...even worse when you hunt all day and don't hear a peep!
Was kept up all night by 2 or 3 roaring stags and decided to let out a roar right on daylight from my sleeping bag. The closest stag started closing in, and I quickly realised he might end up in our tents...
Slithered out in my jocks, grabbed and loaded my rifle that was outside leaning on a tree, right as the stag pushed through the wall of undergrowth.
Shot him from 14ft, standing in the doorway of my tent in my jocks...sat down and put on a brew...good yarn for my mates young fella to tell back a school!
Did a bit of a boys trip up into the big tussock country, public land that gets a bit of pressure but I think most people are a bit lazy and don't walk too far.
No shortage of deer where we ended up and some really cool close encounters.
We had a competition who could shoot the ugliest stag, Dave won hands down.
Another mate shot his first stag with the bow, and we had a bloody good couple of days hunting.
Didn't do as much as we were wanting to do this roar, it goes way too fast.
But it was bloody good to get in the hills amongst roaring stags again after last years debacle.
We've also missed our weather window with tahr ballot blocks, had to pull pin on the last two planned trips.
Fingers crossed we'll be into in it the next week or so!
Cheers
